View Full Version : VERY interesting: 06 HAH software update...higher MPG?

One of the folks over at GH found this out after a question about the HAH tax credit was raised (pre-April 06 gets $650, post gets $1300)

Is it not VERRRY unusual for such a major update to take place mid-year, especially one that seems to significantly change FE and will certainly be noticed? Just the tax credit alone flags this...

Man, I cannot wait to find someone with a new 06 and see the results! I pray that Honda realized IMA is all but useless in the HAH and have adjusted the settings to make it more agressive/engage more often at low speed and 'eco on' acceleration conditions. Let that battery pack swing SOC like the HCH and Insight- I'm tired of a constant 4 bars!

I need to call and find out if the 05 can pick up the update.

(pasted from VMA131Marine, who called Honda America today:)

Apparently, Honda introduced an engine and IMA control software change to the HAH sometime in April. Vehicles will have to have this update to be eligible for the full $1300 tax credit versus $650 without the update. The Honda rep I spoke with said that dealers should have the update available by the end of July for owners of '06 vehicles produced before the change was implemented on the production line. He also suggested that there should be no charge to have the update installed.

The rep couldn't tell me what the effect of the update is other than that it improves fuel economy - my guess is that city mileage will improve while highway mileage will be mostly unaffected.

Hi GoNavy:

___I wouldn’t be getting my hopes up so soon because SW upgrades don’t magically give you 10% increase in FE. What I hope the upgrade does is allow VCM to be based off an actual torque sensor instead of a MAP … That way you could possibly use VCM from 0 mph all the way up? I also hope they made the ECO light match up w/ VCM instead of the 25 mpg + or whatever it was based off of today? The first one would make a difference. The Second one would be purely cosmetic but very useful imho.

___As for the SoC swing, I do not really think you want to go there. At 100,000 + miles out, most might have a little problem if they are always on it. I know you are never on it so it would work great in your case ;)

___Good Luck

...you know me better than to think I am looking for a 10% silver bullet ;)

What you said is exactly what I am looking for- whether it comes form IMA or VCM, the endgame is to see lower fuel usage at the low end instead of banging around like a regular V6. I'm not sure VCM will work super-well at low but transient load conditions- asymmetry is a b*tch; to me it seems that leaning a little more on IMA is easier to implement? Especially when there is almost ZERO IMA usage now!

We'll see. Maybe I'll stop by the dealer today and ask the service dept. As if they'll know.
