View Full Version : The Biggest Gas Guzzlers of All

A thought came this morning.

The worst gas guzzler is not a Hummer.

It's not any particluar vehicle.

It's the guy that gets in a wreck on an urban freeway during rush hour.

Generally it could have been easily avoided.

They could have gotten out of bed on time, paid more attention to their driving, driven sober, not drive just after a fight with the spouse....

It will take gas to do the leg work to fix the car, for the police and wrecker to come.

In Carrollton at I35E and TX190, a thousand or two slowed down...gave me a 25% hit in FE....worse idiotic rubberneckers on the other side slowed down as if this was an event, so nearly double the cars again.

It would be interesting to know how many gallons of gas were wasted over that car wreck

well how about the construction sites on the road....... Thre is only one way to my work and its fixing time again.........5-10mins of gas wasting......long lines.....impatient drivers ..... sometimes i wonder how much my mpg would be without the construction......

@moneysaver

Your mpg wouldn't matter because you wouldn't have any roads to drive on.

Delta Flyer, Not only is the person(s) responsible for the accident causing a huge amount of fuel to be wasted (on both sides of the highway 'cause we are stupid) but since everyone is so packed together tailgaiting, etc. it is seldom a one car accident anymore, it is three to five, requiring more ambulances, police, cleanup, and data gathering. It becomes more like an event rather than an isolated incident. Highways are closed, motorists trapped until those behind them can get out of the way. And, do those so trapped actually turn off their engines? Some do. Others want their A/C, or want to be sure they are warmed up to gain "pole" position the instant cars can begin moving again.

It makes no sense, but then there is nothing in the licensing process that excludes those with absolutely no sense.

I agree as well, though you'd think they would think about HOW they do the road construction. I think there is something there.

Another big gas guzzler occurs when a crowd leaves a stadium, especially after a huge event. A whole lot of idling going on.

Or the 4th of July. In almost every town people go to one spot to watch fireworks, and then drive in huge lines idling along afterwards as they try to leave. But people often get the day off work... so it could go either way.

I'm a big fan of early completion bonuses. Night work is good too, except it's more dangerous and less efficient for the workers.

Lots of accidents on my drive home! Worst drive was 3 separate accidents on the same drive home!

Do you guys know you can check google maps for traffic jams?

Not in all areas, sadly.

I actually prefer Yahoo Maps' presentation of the traffic, at least in my area; they have "incident markers" to show construction, accidents, and so on. You can click on them to see the CHP's reports on whatever the incident is. (I'm quite surprised Google Maps doesn't have that feature; it's quite possible that they do and I just haven't found it yet.)
