...because everyone believes they are ... Special!

Sighted by: Skwyre7
Vehicle: Late model Jeep
Place: Richmond, VA
Date: April 16, 2008

I was sitting at a stop light last night and this Jeep pulls way past the line. (Sorry for the lights in the side view mirror). You can see the white "Stop here" line. The Jeep was a good three car-lengths past it. It even crept up while waiting for the green light!

Note: The "Stop here" line in my lane was further up so people could turn right on red.

Remedy? Stop a lot closer to the line rather than completely in front of it

Have stories of your own? Send them and your pictures and they will be the next “What were they thinking”!

What was more amazing was that they kept creeping forward as they waited for the light to change!

I seen someone do that a few days ago. What I seen was a stop just past the line then slowly creping up. By the time the light turned green he was about 10 feet from the center of the intersection.

The ones I love (since they are earning their just rewards) are the ones that come up to a sensor triggered light, stop in front of the stop bar (and in front of the signal sensor grid in the pavement), and sit there wondering why it is taking so long for them to get a green light.

When I get that far into an intersection, I usually just continue on through (not).

I can only think of one thing. NIGHT VISION.

Well, I have to object a tiny bit. I'm sometimes guilty of
something similar, i.e. winding up a ways past the line and maybe
across the crosswalk, but because of getting nailed by the yellows
that aren't nearly long enough, and stopping anyways, but in
a safe fashion [even though most regen is out the window at
that point] which involves a little more stopping distance than
if I just stood on the ABS -- and gives any vehicle behind a
little more leeway to make their own stop without clobbering
me. If it's really extreme and there's room I'll occasionally
back up, especially if pedestrians want to cross. Otherwise
I have to just sit there and shrug and look stupid, but really,
having to land where I landed was NOT my fault.
.
I really wish traffic lights had visible green-time downcounters
so we could PREDICT these things. With reports coming of
deliberately shortened yellows here and there for the purposes
of revenue enhancement, and knowing that late-yellow shooters
are one of the leading intersection accident causes, I really
want to play it safe but sometimes that's made really difficult.
.
Rip out all the lights and put in proper roundabouts, I say...

Hobbit,

I agree with you that sometimes it's unavoidable. But in this case the light was red for about 10-15 seconds before he stopped where he did. The yellow was of average length. He had plenty of time to see that he should stop.

I truely like Hobbits ideas about a little more warning..

I've seen yellows run for 2 seconds and dome for upto 5 seconds..

there is no consistancy, its due to the manufacturer of the timer I've been told..

I also believe they should time the lights much more to have less dead stop situations..
That way we have less waste and pollution..

_Hey Wayne, I like the "What were they thinking" title ;)

Yeah, it would be nice if the lights were like in Mexico, where lights give a blinking green for 1-2 seconds before going yellow. I also like it in Europe how the yellow light comes on right before the light turns green.
