BEVs, PHEVs, and Carbon Neutral manufacturing with a soft plan to drop ICEs by 2035. Wayne Gerdes – CleanMPG – Jan. 28, 2021 Just three weeks after launching their new global brand Logo to improve and accelerate mass adoption of their electric vehicle lineup, Gm announced it plans to become carbon neutral by 2040. The “Everybody In” new Gm logo campaign was a fresh start as Gm targets zero emissions and zero accidents going forward. To get there, Gm is investing as much as $27 billion in EV and AV products through 2025 and plans to launch of 30 new EVs globally by the end of 2025. In 2019, GM threw its support behind the Trump administration’s lawsuit to block California’s clean-car and GHG emissions standards. The EPA projected that the Obama Administration standards would prevent up to 2,000 premature deaths and 50,000 cases of respiratory ailments in children each year. On Nov 23, 2020 with the Biden-Harris Presidential election win just 3-weeks in the rearview, Gm Execs reversed course announcing it will back California’s efforts to improve efficiency and cut tailpipe emissions to address the climate crisis. With the Political winds reversal, new logo, and hard electrification push, Gm also announced it will worked with the Environmental Defense Fund to develop a shared vision of an all-electric future and an aspiration to eliminate tailpipe emissions from new light-duty vehicles by 2035. Gm’s focus will be offering zero-emissions vehicles across a range of price points. Gm may state they are committed to reaching carbon neutrality in its global products and operations by 2040 but let us be real, if a future Administration reverses course, Gm can and will follow that admins lead to remove any impediment to political pressure and or backlash. On the positive side, once clean vehicle and plant investments are made, to change course and follow a less planet friendly outcome would be hard for even Gm to do. Gm said it plans to decarbonize its portfolio by transitioning to zero-emission vehicles including BEVs, PHEVs, and FCEVs while sourcing renewable energy and leveraging minimal offsets or credits. Gms Electrification Gms $27 billion investment or up to half of its entire capital spending plan includes the fast-track development of the Ultium battery program, updating facilities, and to build electric vehicles. Within those goals, Gm plans to offer an electrified vehicle for every customer, from crossovers and SUVs to trucks and sedans. In the interim, Gm plans to improve ICE fuel efficiency to meet California’s regional fuel economy and greenhouse gas regulations. Some of these initiatives include fuel economy improvement technologies, such as Stop/Start, aerodynamic efficiency enhancements, downsized boosted engines, more efficient transmissions and other vehicle improvements, including mass reduction and lower rolling resistance tires. Gm will aspire to source 100 percent renewable energy to power its U.S. manufacturing, marketing, and operations sites by 2030 and global sites by 2035, To account for the expected remaining carbon emissions, Gm plans to invest in carbon credits or offsets albeit with a very carefully worded release on those purchases. Including terms like “most efficient”, “equitable” and “inclusive ideas”. The carbon neutral commitment applies to its global product portfolio as well. The company is implementing plans to reduce the impact associated with its supply chain while supporting grids and utilities to power PHEV/BEVs with ambitious targets for the supply chain to reduce emissions, increase transparency and source more sustainable materials. While electric vehicles themselves do not emit tailpipe emissions, it is critical that they be charged with electricity generated from renewable sources like wind and solar. The company is also working with EVgo to triple the size of the nation’s largest public fast charging network by adding more than 2,700 new fast chargers by the end of 2025, a move set to help accelerate widespread electric vehicle adoption. The new fast chargers will be powered by 100 percent renewable energy. Gm believes that the energy sector is well on its way to a decarbonized grid and that an all-electric future will be supported by renewable infrastructure and technology. Cadillac’s First Fully Electric BEV This is a huge commitment by Gm and while they will change course to flow with whatever political wind is in place at the time, let us all hope they make the investments to hold true to the plans as true transition to more environmentally friendly products are brought to the consumer marketplace in short order.
