I switched back to VW about 15 months ago and am happy with my GTI. Turned 11K miles on it yesterday. I was at the point where I could no longer justify a hybrid, as little as I drive. Car is amazingly good on highway cruises with a 7 speed trans, I got 44.2 last year. And being chipped the car is terrifyingly fast when I nail it, which I rarely do. I'm an old man and drive like one.

I think this is the thread you're looking for.

edit/hint: I haven't put much energy into using the site search optimally, and I often get frustrated, so I use Google's search engine by searching 'site:cleanmpg.com' plus the search terms with pluses and minuses to direct the search. That's how I found the above thread. :D

Thanks , Bill. I need to read that again myself.

Hmmm........if only VAG didn't kill the future of diesel.
    That angered me.

So do I. But I would love a GTI.

A few years earlier, Oldsmobile badly wounded it in the US.

My brother-in-law in Austria just bought a Ford Ranger Raptor. I initially poo-pooed it not realizing what it was and what it was for. It turns out to be a very capable diesel-powered truck that will be used around his large, wooded property for log-hauling and other things on unimproved trails. I think it's pretty good for that purpose though there are probably other good choices. Doubtful we'd get a diesel-powered Raptor here... I don't know if he got it used or new, but it was apparently highly discounted.
