Honda's electrification initiative and "Safety for Everyone" campaign will be joined at the hip as the company debuts an all-new auto show exhibit at the 2019 Los Angeles Auto Show on Nov. 20. The all-new 2020 Honda CR-V Hybrid is Honda's first hybrid-electric SUV for U.S. consumers.

The 2020 CR-V Hybrid launches next spring using Honda's two-motor hybrid-electric powertrain as currently found in the Insight and Accord. It provides a quicker launch than the current CR-V from which it will be based and is anticipated to achieve a 42 mpgUS city rating, some 50 percent higher than the city rating of the non-hybrid CR-V with the award winning 1.5L turbo! If that metric is reached, it will achieve the highest city rated Hybrid CUV offered in the U.S. beating out the highly regarded 2019/2020 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid in the process. It also includes an 8-year and possibly 100k mile traction battery warranty similar to that provided on the Accord and Insight HEV.

Like the standard 2020 Honda CR-V, the CR-V hybrid will arrive with the full line of Honda Sensing safety and driver-assist technology standard. Missing is Rear Cross Traffic Alert on the base trim of the non-hybrid and I expect the same for the Hybrid. There are no proximity sensors front or rear on any trim.

The 2020 Honda CR-V Hybrid will be built in Honda's Greensburg, Indiana plant, and joins the Accord Hybrid and Insight as the third electrified Honda manufactured in America.

    New Honda Auto Show Exhibit

An all-new Honda auto show exhibit for the U.S. makes its debut at the L.A. Auto Show. The new display will offer a hands-on experience for show goers interested in learning about the stories behind the Honda Brand.

The new floor space features the following:
    • HondaLens Live – an augmented reality showcase of the 2020 CR-V Hybrid
    • Honda Safety Zone – featuring a crash-tested 2019 Civic Coupe, real-world customer storytelling and a Seatbelt
    • Selfie Wall
    • Honda x Gaming Zone
    • Honda Winning Moment – A photo booth where show goers can place themselves in the scenes of historical sports moments, including in IndyCar, National Hockey League and League of Legends championships
In addition to top crashworthiness scores, all Honda CR-Vs arrive with standard Honda Sensing suite of safety and driver-assistive technologies. Honda Sensing includes Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS) incorporating Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS), and Road Departure Mitigation (RDM) incorporating Lane Departure Warning (LDW).

The 2019 Los Angeles Auto Show is open to the public from Nov. 22 through Dec. 1 at the L.A. Convention Center.

I wonder now if this will be same engine as the European CR-V Hybrid which is 2.0 I-MMD? Since otherwise not sure it would get that city mpg.

    Hi Luke:

The 1.5L in the Insight offers just 151 net system hp while the Accord Hybrid's 2.0L provides 181 hp and 232 lb-ft. of torque. To compete against the 2019/2020 RAV4 Hybrids new 219 hp output, they will surely use the Accord Hybrids 2.0L Hybrids drivetrain. It is bolt in and go in the CR-V. With efficiency dropping from the Accord Hybrids 48/47/48 mpgUS city/highway/combined rating to 42???/40???/41??? mpgUS city/highway/combined rating, CR-V Hybrid looks very similar to the drop from the Camry Hybrid's 44/47/46 to the RAV4 Hybrids 41/38/40 mpgUS city/highway/combined ratings.

Thanks Wayne. Unfortunately if that's the system from the European CR-V hybrid it won't look that great:

    RAV4 Hybrid: 4.4-4.6l / 100km
    CR-V Hybrid: 5.3-5.5l / 100 km

Difference also matches reviews: about 20% less efficient than the RAV4. Then again if they are expecting 42 mpg in city, perhaps they improved the system for the US market. If not, it's probably bit lower than 40 mpg.

    Hi Luke:

Honda reported that the 2020 Honda CR-V Hybrid will provide at least a 50 percent boost over the city efficiency of the std. CR-V which in AWD trim and 1.5T is rated at 27 mpg. This indicates the Honda CR-V Hybrids city rating should be at least 40.5 mpg city rating. If that is based on the 2.4L AWD and its 25 mpgUS city rating, the calculated 38 mpgUS city rating would indeed fall short of the usually superlative 2019/2020 RAV4 Hybrid and its 41 mpgUS city rating.

When we get into the real-world results, the Accord HEV and Insight appear to be falling short of their ratings for most and that has been our experience in both during warmer temps on drives crossing a large swath of the country to short stints around town or around a rally loop. The RAV4 HEV has proven itself in temps above freezing but below, it has severely under performed. So much so I am having second thoughts about my recommendations for anyone that endures temps below 32 degrees F for anything more than 3-months during the winter season.

If it's within 10% of the RAV4 that would still be pretty good. I had great experience with the previous gen Accord Hybrid in terms of efficiency (mostly because I do more city than highway driving). That said I'm waiting and hoping for an Acura hybrid/PHEV to get little bit more luxury. But not sure there are any plans for that.

    Hi All:

Los Angeles, CA -- The all-new upcoming 2020 Honda CR-V Hybrid was named the 2020 Green SUV of the Year by Green Car Journal. The addition of a new AWD CR-V using Honda's two-motor hybrid system to the CR-V platform offers the consumer a compelling reason to consider one.

The 2020 Honda CR-V Hybrid is scheduled for release early next year and like the RAV4 Hybrid in the Toyota lineup is expected to be the company's top-selling hybrid model in short order.

Recently the brand was recognized as Honda Leads U.S. in Efficiency in Fuel Efficiency in 2019 EPA Report. In the U.S., Honda’s electrified vehicle sales in 2019 are up 34 percent from year-with more than 50,000 Insight and Accord hybrids, plus a miniscule number of Clarity PHEV and FCVs sold. Hybrid sales by themselves are up 82 percent for the year.

Last year, the 2019 Honda Insight won a Green Car of the Year award joining prior winners including the 2012 Honda Civic Natural Gas, and 2018 Honda Clarity Plug-In Hybrid, Clarity Electric and Clarity Fuel Cell.
