Larger inside, safer, quicker, smarter, and more efficient. Wayne Gerdes – CleanMPG – April 10, 2018 The all-new 2019 Ford Focus will be available as a 4-door sedan, 5-door hatch, and 5-door wagon depending on the market. European region spec shown. Ford introduced the all-new global Focus featuring the latest advanced and affordable technology with more comfort and space and a better fun-to-drive experience according to company officials. Redesigned from the wheels up, the next-generation Focus will be specifically tailored to a given global region. The all-new Focus features 4-door sedan and 5-door hatch – surely destined for our shores and probably Asia’s, and a 5-door wagon for Europe. It will also be one of the first Ford vehicles designed around a common platform process like VWs MQB and Toyota’s TNGA platforms. Ford has reduced the number of orderable Focus configurations by as much as 92 percent versus the current Focus, reducing from up to 360 configurations to as few as 26, depending on the market. This complexity reduction helps Ford lower costs. The next-generation Focus includes a longer hood with cab-rearward interior, yet overall exterior dimensions remain unchanged. This one has me questioning the new designs ability to compete within the North American marketplace. Except for the Focus, the largest volume by sales compacts are all built upon a 106.3” wheelbase with lengths ranging from 180 to 184” and passenger volumes between 94 and 98 cu. ft. 2018 Honda Civic WB/Length/Passenger Vol. (cu. ft.): 106.3"/182.3"/97.8 cu ft. 2018 Toyota Corolla WB/Length/Passenger Vol. (cu. ft.): 106.3/183.1"/97.5 cu. ft. 2018 Nisan Versa WB/Length/Passenger Vol. (cu. ft.): 106.3"/182.1"/95.9 cu. ft. 2018 Hyundai Elantra WB/Length/Passenger Vol. (cu. ft.): 106.3/179.9"/95.8 cu. ft. 2018 Chevrolet Cruze WB/Length/Passenger Vol. (cu. ft.): 106.3"/183.7"/94.x cu. ft. 2018 Ford Focus WB/Length/Passenger Vol. (cu. ft.): 104.3"/178.7/90.0 cu. ft. The current Focus is no larger than many B-segment offerings but thankfully the next gen will provide more backseat room by extending the wheelbase and flat floor. Shoulder-room increases by nearly 2.4” while and knee and rear seat legroom increase by 2” and 2.8” respectively. How they moved to rearward cabin and increased interior volume with a shorter vehicle has me questioning the release. Up front, the instrument panel positioning is optimized for getting into and out of the car. An electric parking brake and rotary gear shift dial free up space. A narrower center console features soft knee pads for more comfort. The HVAC system will heat and cool the cabin faster and more quietly. The shape of the sideview mirrors are said to help prevent buffeting when one window is lowered at speed. 2019 Ford Focus Safety The all-new Ford Focus will debut Ford Co-Pilot360, a suite of advanced driver assist technology that will vary by region. These include Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Stop & Go, Speed Sign Recognition and Lane-Centering, Ford’s Adaptive Front Lighting System with new camera-based predictive curve light and Sign-based light that pre-adjust headlamp patterns for improved visibility. A new version of Active Park Assist will now operate gear selection, acceleration and braking to enable fully automated maneuvers at the push of a button. Evasive Steering Assist helps drivers steer around stopped or slower vehicles to help avoid collisions. 2019 Ford Focus Infotainment Ford’s new Focus will be equipped with internet connectivity with FordPass Connect embedded modem technology. This allows Ford customers to turn the vehicle into a mobile WiFi hotspot with connectivity for up to 10 devices. Along with a monthly charge to a Ford service provider. Live Traffic updates and streaming entertainment are also part of the equation along with the FordPass mobile app which provides a vehicle locator, vehicle status, remote door Lock/Unlock, and remote start. A new Qi wireless charging pad beneath the instrument panel will be available. Devices can remain connected via Bluetooth to Ford’s SYNC 3 communications and entertainment system while using wireless charging. SYNC 3 also is available with an 8” color touchscreen w/ pinch and swipe gestures and is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. 2019 Ford Focus Ride and Handling The all-new Focus remains true to its 20-year legacy of class-leading driving dynamics. It’s more fun-to-drive thanks to an all-new chassis and suspension with a 20 percent increase in torsional rigidity. An all-new Electric Power Assisted Steering (EPAS) system provides more steering feel. All-new Focus offers standard Drive Mode Technology – including Normal, Sport and Eco modes – for the first time, enabling drivers to adjust engine and transmission response, steering feel and Adaptive Cruise Control to match the driving situation from sporty to efficiency-minded. In China and probably here, the all-new 2019 Focus will be equipped with a range of gasoline engines including the aging 1.0L I3 EcoBoost, plus an all-new higher power 1.5L EcoBoost I4. In Europe, Focus will be available with the 1.5L EcoBoost gasoline and 2.0L EcoBlue turbo diesel. It is highly unlikely we will receive the turbo diesel, but one can hope. Ford’s new optional 8-speed AT is engineered to further optimize fuel-efficiency. It will include Adaptive Shift Scheduling and Adaptive Shift Quality. The all-new Focus goes on sale in Europe and China later this year and North America in the second half of 2019.
