    BTW, ..

I paid $139 for this tiny little motorcycle battery 6 years ago. It is now listed for $169. I've seen the same trend with e-bike lithium batteries over the same time frame.

When, exactly, is the "lithium battery : increased volume = lower market price" thing supposed to happen !? From what I've seen, the prices just go up.

Ballistic let me have a 20% discount, .. so I ordered a replacement battery. I'll either swap it out this spring, or just carry it along with me if I get far from home. Not worried about the shelf -life on the new one, so I'm kinda curious how long the old battery will go.

I was just coming here to update everyone... I came home from work today and it was on the porch. The battery is noticeably lighter than the OEM lead battery. I pushed the self test button, and it read 13.3 volts right out of the box. I went to install it in the FEH and found out that the battery has two tabs on the right and left of the battery that were not included in the stated battery dimensions, so it was a little too big to fit squarely in the battery tray. A few minutes with a hacksaw and they were gone, and the battery fit the tray perfectly.

Resting voltage is 13.3 volts, and running volts were 13.6 - 13.8. Compared to the lead battery at 12.0 resting, and 14.1 running. The inverter is barely running to keep that charge maintained. Hopefully this results in better mileage? We shall see.

A lead acid battery resting at 12.0V is in VERY bad shape. likely at less than 50% SoC and slowly dissolving itself internally causing further damage. There are some variations due to type (AGM, gel, flooded, etc.), and temperature influences it, but a fully charged resting 12V battery rests at about 12.6-12.7V after sitting for 24 hours after receiving a full charge. One connected to a car may be slightly lower due to the very small parasitic drain (maybe 30mA).

Concerning the inverter, the inverter is providing 100% of all 12V power including what is needed to float the 12V battery, lights, spark plugs, computers, etc. Once a 12V hits the float point, it's current drain is extremely low... like 10W for a typical medium size battery. 10W isn't going to show up on a mileage measurement. If the inverter was running at max to keep the battery floated prior to failure, than you should see a small improvement over what should have been maybe 1-3 days worth of high drain driving before the battery crapped the bed, but not the longer term.

Make sure you factor in any weather changes.

Whatever the case, it's lighter, you've embarked on a good experiment, and there's a decent chance it's going to last longer if it's well made. :)

Cool. With a second one in hand and the balance charger, you could easily compare the two. Would be very interesting to see how they stack up.... :)

Keith: The battery is almost 6 years old, and in the FEH community I always tell folks that if the battery is over 5 years old, just replace it even if you haven't had any problems. Well, I was considering replacing it, but with Christmas expenses and such, I figured I wasn't having problems, I could let it slide a little longer. Well, I had to jump start my car a couple weeks ago to get home from work. That night I ordered a new battery, and hoped my old one would hang in long enough for it to come in.

First full day of me driving around with the new battery. The FEH has been starting reliably. I did get the CHECK BRAKES message when I first left home this morning, but that is normal after disconnecting the battery. The voltage is really stable while running, not like the wild swings that the old lead battery had. Even loaded up with everything on, the voltage only dipped 0.1 volt. Too early to tell if there's any mileage gains, especially since I put the 4wd fuse back in last night because it was snowing.
