2017 Toyota Prius Prime - $28,209 to start incl. mats and the $885 D&H charge provides owners with a 55/53 mpgUS city/highway as a hybrid and 25 miles of all-electric range on the plug. It comes to a whole lot less with the dealership discounts, Toyota rebates, Fed Tax Credit, and State Incentives if available.

While Toyota’s North American HQ Grand Opening garnered today’s attention (Toyota’s Billion-Dollar North American HQ is Open for Business), a far more important consumer oriented detail was revealed.

Toyota leads the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) awards list of all manufacturers with twelve receiving its highest award, the TOP SAFETY PICK+ (TSP+).

According to the IIHS testing, the Toyota Prius Prime, Toyota’s premiere hybrid offering, ranks as a TSP+ winner.

To qualify for the TSP+ rating, a vehicle must earn good ratings in the five IIHS crashworthiness tests including the bastard of a hit, front small overlap, plus the moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraint(s). To earn the Institutes highest rating a vehicle must also earn an advanced or superior rating for front crash prevention and at least an acceptable or good headlight rating.

Here is the 2017 Class of Toyota and Lexus IIHS Top Safety Pick+ rating winners:
    • Toyota Avalon (with specific headlights and built after March 2017)
    • Toyota Prius (built after August 2016)
    • Toyota Prius Prime
    • Toyota Corolla
    • Toyota Camry (with available front crash prevention and specific headlights)
    • Toyota Prius v (with available front crash prevention and specific headlights)
    • Toyota RAV4 (with specific headlights)
    • Toyota Highlander
    • Lexus RC (with available front crash prevention and specific headlights)
    • Lexus ES 350 (with specific headlights)
    • Lexus NX (with available front crash prevention and specific headlights)
    • Lexus RX (with specific headlights)
I chose to highlight the 2017 Toyota Prius Prime given its recent new even lower price point for those interested in one of the best automotive bargains of the decade.
