    Hi Bill:

Thanks and what a great find!!! I will be taking my mom to go see one after the new Years and according to the location pdf, one is in Libertyville, about 20 miles from their home in IL.

    HI All:

First refuel at the Shell located at 202 N. Motel Road in Las Cruces, NM.

765.3 miles out and still a quarter of a tank. Pulling the seal!

And the fill itself. Topped off, 765.3 miles on 9.447 gallons for an 81.009 mpg result. The tank seal was reinstalled, signed, the aFCD auto resets on a fill and the Garmin Trip B was reset for the next fuel stop to fuel stop segment. While this was going on, Bob and I had cameras running for video of the displays when we rolled in, the tank seal being removed with the attendant, Joyce Benitez, watching all of that, watching the top off, the cap install and fuel door shut, tank seal installed, signing and even her signing all of the documentation. A lot of work on her part and a crazy amount on ours. :)

    Hi All:

The Great State of Texas and the longest state to cross begins...

At this point, we are about 14-hours behind schedule with the 4 hours later than expected launch out of LA, earlier than planned overnight stop in AZ, and the maintenance stop in Las Cruces. This is going to hurt going forward as we are going to miss a clean - low cross/head winds - weather window across Central and Eastern Texas and even through part of the Gulf States...

    Hi All:

To try and gain some of those hours back, I had to drive further into the night and the resultant colder temps than originally planned. A short few hour stop in Stockton, TX was the only respite until Corpus Christi.

At this point, I am trading off elevation for the low temperatures... And yet another early AM wakeup call with a quick breakfast at Carl's Jr. WTH??? ;)

A detour due to conditions heading south in a big hurry was necessary just a few hours after this AM food stop…

    Hi All:

At this point, Bob is taking care of business behind the wheel. We knew what was coming and boy was it coming. A 15 to 20 mph wind out of the Northeast was blasting the car and taking down our efficiency in a big hurry. Bob said it is time... We were down to just 77.2 mpg as we turned south for even warmer weather and hopefully lower cross winds before make the turn back east-northeast at Eagle Pass, TX along the TX/Mexico border as the last rays of light disappeared. I was hoping we could make it to Sonora but if I had to do it all over again, we should have turned south with the winds off our rear quarter in Ozona, TX to save even more of the gains built up to that point. Just 6 to 8 hours sooner and we would have been home free.

    2017 Kia Niro Hybrid

By the time we reached Del Rio, TX, about 90 miles south of Sonora, TX, Bob had regained most of the weather losses in exchange for a short segment with rear quartering tail winds – a breakeven proposition – and a 2,000' descent.

I took over, drove SE to Eagle Pass, TX on US 277, transitioned to US 83 heading S-SE in Carrizo Springs, and made the almost due east turn onto TX 44 heading to Corpus Christi with the now strong frontal cross winds dying off a bit as day turned to night…

    Hi All:

With the southern route detour, and our overnight destination setup in Corpus Christi, we added over 200 miles to our distance which meant we would more than likely not reach our second planned refueling in Lafayette, Louisiana. In come the alternates.

Early the following morning we had two Shell's picked out within the city limits on our way northeast to get back on the I-10 in Houston. Both were unfortunately closed when we arrived so 5-minutes on the net, a phone call to make sure they could assist, and we arrived at Rudy's BBQ. Rudy’s BBQ? And gasoline of course. ;)

    About Rudy’s BBQ

Just north of San Antonio sits the small community of Leon Springs. Founded in the 1800s by Max Aue, Leon Spring's cityscape changed when Max's son, Rudolph, opened a one-stop gas station, garage, and grocery store.

Bar-B-Q was added to the operation 27 years ago in 1989, and Rudy's "Country Store" and Bar-B-Q has been serving up tasty food ever since. The same original recipes that built Rudy's Leon Springs' reputation are now available throughout the Southwest. And one that we were interested in particular was Rudy’s BBQ located at 6101 South Padre Island Drive in Corpus Christi, TX.

    2017 Kia Niro Hybrid

Rudy’s BBQ in Corpus Christi, TX. This was not going to be an ordinary refueling stop. :D

According to Rudy’s BBQ - About Us link, their pits are 100% wood fired with oak, a slower burning wood than the mesquite used by others. Along with time and oak, they cook with a dry spice that ensures each plate of Rudy's Bar-B-Q is perfectly ready for you. Apply some of their famous "Sauce" and dinner is served.

From the morning orders lined up on the sales counter and revolving door of patrons picking up BBQ at 07:00 am, Rudy’s has great BBQ! If only … Our station attendant, Chad Erickson – see collage, was cooking prior to taking over the station desk when we arrived. Shortly afterwards he was handling GWR documentation for an entirely different purpose.

A short 200 mile drive to Houston, and onto Lafayette, Louisiana to get the refueling schedule back on track and where we get to do it all over again. I sure wish we would have picked up a "To Go" box as the BBQ aroma inside was overwhelmingly good!

    Hi All:

We reached the Shell at 1514 Evangeline Thruway in Lafayette, LA with just enough time to get the pre-refueling documentation, the refuel, and post refuel documentation complete before they closed for the night. Desiree Celestine was our attendant help that night and thank goodness station traffic calmed down for the last 90-minutes or we would have never been able to finish. Thank you for your patience Desiree!

While still over 18-hours behind schedule due to the launch snafu and maintenance stop, light headwinds and cooler temperatures were predicted all the way to the Atlantic Coast of Florida and there was nothing we could do to postpone other than press on. Mississippi, Alabama and Florida, here we come.

    Hi All:

I was trying everything to keep that aFCD from falling below the hard deck of 74.3 mpg as the headwinds and high 40s to mid-50 degree temps continued to hamper efforts through the pre-dawn hours.

Bob’s trip highlight was the Kia of Las Cruces stop. Mine was the beautifully manicured thoroughfares – almost a suburban boulevard despite the higher speeds – on the I-10 across the entire state of Florida. Temperatures climbed and the headwinds became calmer crosswinds with the tall trees helping to take some of the sting out of the efficiency hit as the day wore on. More to come including a really cool McDonalds stop just a few hours ahead…

But first, the FL Rest Areas. I have seen my fair share of Rest Areas across the country. Some pretty cool ones in Texas, Missouri, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Virginia come to mind. The brand new rest areas going up along the I-10 in Florida are chart topping. Beautiful new landscaping, unique statuettes and backdrops, and just a comfortable visit. This Welcome Center stop with the Florida entry marquee and Blue Angles mockup was pretty slick if I do say so myself.

Well. this was my favorite part of the trip. When we pulled up - after closing time - there was nothing but big smiles and cell phone cameras clicking away with these road angels, as Wayne would say. They were the nicest people - I just can't say enough. I was tired after driving how many hours when we pulled in, the GWR attempt seemed in doubt. Felt like a new man when we left, after the very capable folks here looked over the Niro, I felt like the record was achievable again.

    Thank you.

    Hi All:

Every person and every place has a story...

This is Diane just behind and to my right and co-driver Robert Winger directly behind.

On the road with the 2017 Kia NIro Hybrid

I visit over 100 different McDonald's each year on my travels around the country and never before have I seen this level of dedication to please the customer as Diane provided from this #McDonald's in #Bonifay, FL.

She not only delivers your order to your table with a smile and beaming demeanor, she visits with each guest a second and third time to make sure everything is just perfect. Kind of like a very professional waitress or waiter except...

Diane works at this McDonalds not because she has too but because she wants to. She and her husband recently sold their multi-million dollar farm which means an imminent retirement but also saying goodbye to a job she has not just held but loved for more than three years.

It is not about the $s with Diane. It is about a person that truly wants to make our day better than it was just because she can.

Thank you Diane from two weary travelers pulling off the road for a quick respite and receiving far more than we could have ever imagined.

    Hi All:

The rest of the way across Florida to the 295 bypass around Jacksonville, and the 95 up to Georgia flew by. A great stretch of roadway for the traveler in all of us.

Temps came up and the light north winds being blocked by the continuous row of tall trees helped boost the overall prior to our turn North and into the teeth of what Bob and I knew was coming.

    We reach the Georgia border.

Between Sunday Dec. 4th at 04:18 pm PST when we circled LA City Hall while departing LA and Thursday Dec. 8 at 05:34 pm PST – 4-days and 1.5 hours – while parked in front of the Georgia border sign, we had covered 2,705.7 miles. Within that time span, we had three overnight stops, a maintenance stop, numerous breaks and meal stops, plus three 2-hour plus refuelings all behind us.

With the expected colder temperatures as we head up the Eastern Seaboard and very unfortunate front quartering headwinds for 2/3 of the way yet again, this is the segment where I had planned to slow down and take 2 + days to cover the last 900 miles in the hopes to lessen some of the mid-December temperature efficiency hit we were bound to encounter as we continued northeastward. Say goodbye to any chance for 80 mpg displayed results now that we have made the turn northward.

At the SC Border, 77.6 mpg, 82 mi DTE and the Garmin Trip A/B at 2818.4/800.5 mi.

There is small problem beginning to brew at this time. We still have almost 125 miles to go before the refueling stop in Manning, SC and DTE is showing just 82 miles. The best I can deduce over the previous 4,000+ miles is that the Niro’s DTE is based on its 49 mpg combined rating. Meaning we had better be achieving close to 75 mpg regardless of the conditions or we will be pushing the Niro to the next refueling stop ahead. With the second Garmin showing the 125 miles DTE to the Shell in Manning, the self-inflicted anxiety was would they cross before we reached bingo fuel? I battled that in my head with every tick off of the Niro DTE, the now falling aFCD, and the secondary Garmin’s DTE.

Before reaching that next scheduled Shell refueling stop in Manning, we pulled in for the night in St. George, SC with temperatures between 37 and 40 degrees F over the previous 100 miles. A Lowest Fuel Consumption - Guinness World Record Attempt in temps heading to freezing is just nuts!!! But somehow we survived. ;) Bob was fast asleep in his winter sleeping bag and I had on every heavy shirt, my winter gloves, and full winter hat on in the car to preserve every ounce of electrical power for the drive vs. our comfort. Damn that was a cold and edgy segment.

    Hi All:

With temps down to 33 degrees the following morning, we waited while taking in a big breakfast at the hotel. 45-minute later and it was up to 37 degrees and it was time to roll. This was not going to be fun.

As I exited the I-95 off-ramp with the station just a few blocks down the road, the DTE went to ---. There was still a pip of fuel showing so there was some left in there. How much? I doubt anyone will ever find out. ;)

This Shell was hopping and they only had one attendant until the manager was scheduled to arrive in an hour. While waiting, I may as well hand out some Shell “Surprise and Delight” $10 Gift Cards to patrons who were refueling. Shell paid for our fuel and also supplied 30 gift cards to pass out across the country. To that end, Los Angeles Shell patrons, Las Cruces, NM Shell patrons, a Rudy’s BBQ employee in Corpus Christi, Lafayette, LA Shell patrons, and now Manning, SC Shell patrons were on the receiving end of this early Christmas present courtesy of the Shell Corporation.

Can you say 10 lbs of **** in a 5 lb bag? Or should I say 12.043 gallons in an 11.9 gallon tank? ;)

But wait just a minute, this SC refueling story is not yet complete. We found out that the Station Mgr., Cheryl Johnson, who was helping us with all of the required GWR documentation was also a Kia Optima owner. When we found that out, she received a Kia hat!

    Hi All:

With the final refuel in Manning, SC before the Guinness World Record Adjudication witnessed refuel in NY City behind us, we back calculated what was needed to get to NY City at the minimum target 74.3 mpg.

With 683 miles to go or 3,617.2 miles cumulative to the NY City Shell, it looks something like this. 48.683 gal - 37.462 gal = 11.221 gal available to consume in order to cover the final 683 miles and achieve the cumulative 74.3 mpg GWR result over the entire 3,617.2 miles or 60.868 mpg over that final lengthy 683 mile stint. And we still had a full two days to get to NY City by the morning of Sunday Dec. 11th, 2016 too!

I let out a sigh of relief knowing that despite the ever worsening weather conditions, we would have to be hit with a blizzard to knock the 2017 Kia Niro that far off its current world record pace. No blizzard was forecast all the way up the eastern seaboard other than a little snow forecast for the evening after we had arrived. Below freezing temps and strengthening headwinds right down the windscreen as the day wore on sure were however. Maybe our calculations and ensuing celebration were a bit premature? Let’s find out.

Despite the below freezing temperatures, the Niro is still holding its own. Maybe not quite GWR levels but darn close to it and far above any other CUV I have driven even in perfect 75 to 85 degree temps. As in every CUV I have driven proving just how this world class CUV is burying its competitors in the efficiency department arena.

Tomorrow is a relatively short day with an overnight stop in NJ before crossing of the George Washington Bridge into NY City on Sunday morning for the Guinness World Records Adjudication.
