[IMG] The VW brand moves beyond the TDI with new product – as shown – and a penchant for electrification.

2018 VW Atlas – U.S. built with pricing and EPA TBA at a later date.

With the static launch of the 2018 VW Atlas, the German marque is set to place the TDI debacle behind it. The seven-passenger Atlas offers the latest safety and infotainment technology plus Volkswagen’s excellent driving dynamics. Nothing handles like an affordable VW and the Atlas is sure to provide one of the best experiences in the midsize segment.

With a Modular Transverse Matrix (MQB) architecture, the Atlas includes the latest Volkswagen design DNA. Like the Passat, a bit too conservative to move metal from the showroom imho. Proportions? 198.3 inches long, 77.9 inches wide, and 69.6 inches tall.

LED headlamps, DRLs and optional LED taillamps will add to its efficiency.

Inside, the Atlas includes a somewhat cramped third-row with a folding second row seat to help proving better access than most competitors.

An available Volkswagen Digital Cockpit – think 20017 Audi Q7 – allows drivers to reconfigure how they view vehicle information.

    2018 VW Atlas Infotainment

VW’s Car-Net system is not standard across all trims. An unusual product planning shortfall in this day and age. Car-Net includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and MirrorLink. The vehicle can also be equipped with the optional but excellent 480W 12 speakers Fender Audio System.

    2018 VW Atlas Safety

The Atlas will not leave owners lacking in the safety department either thanks to the inclusion of Adaptive Cruise Control, Forward Collision Warning with Autonomous Emergency Braking; Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert; Lane Departure Warning, and Park Assist. VW did not say which or if all of these features will be standard but given it is a 2018, the FCW w/ Autonomous braking has to be.

And like the rest of the VW lineup, the Atlas will include the brands Automatic Post-Collision Braking System. Automatic Post-Collision Braking System applies the brakes when a primary collision is detected by the airbag sensors, helping to reduce residual velocity and the chance of additional collision damage.

    2018 VW Atlas Drivetrain

The Atlas is slated to offer possibly the highest efficiency in the segment from one of the two drivetrains but there was no 3.0L V6 TDI announcement. :(

A 238 hp turbocharged and direct-injected 2.0L TSI I4 will be the standard engine with a 280 hp 3.6L V6 available. Both will be mated to an 8-speed AT as a FWD or AWD with the V6.

The biggest problem with the 2017 Audi Q7 was its lack of the brands super 3.0L turbo diesel and the Atlas is left out as well.

The Atlas will be built alongside the Passat at the LEED Platinum Certified VW Chattanooga assembly plant. Along with U.S. availability in the Spring of next year, the Atlas will be exported to other markets to be announced at a later date.

    And what about electrification?

Hinrich J. Woebcken, VW North American Region CEO and President, VWGoA said the following at Thursday evenings static reveal in Santa Monica, Calif.:
    2018 VW Atlas Early Conclusions

Interior looks good and it will have plenty of utility. Infotainment with the latest VW MIB systems and safety should be top notch as well. Hopefully an 8” or 12” central display audio screen will be available although I did not hear that option being mentioned. Without a 3.0L TDI and the plain exterior, sales may be limited.

    Hi Thunderstruck:

It is not a lack of hp, it is a lack of efficiency that hurts the Q7. Until the TDI comes back, the 2.0L TSI or 3.6l FSI are bandaids as there is nothing that makes the Atlas stand out from anything else in the segment. That 3.0L TDI super diesel really made the Q5, A6/A7 and Q7. :(

Atlas/Fender Audio tagline: "The best seats in the house are the first three rows." <-- They nailed it!

Early on without driving one yet, the SE w/ Tech and the I4 would be an early first choice although I sure wish it came w/ the Fender Audio system.

The burgers are pretty darn good here too.

    Hi All:

    A New Beginning

We were provided with the Tech Presentation earlier this evening.

Jim Burch - Product Mgr. of Atlas

2018 VW Atlas is built on the MQB Platform.

The MQB platform provides a reduction of costs, lower one-off expenditure, less engineering hours/vehicle, length, width, height flexibility, and alternative powertrain concepts...

The MQB platform began with the Mk 7 Golf Family, now Atlas and soon the all-new next gen 2018 VW Tiguan.

The Fender Telecaster is a wonderful instrument , but having owned a Tele and a Stratocaster , the Strat wins hands down. Why ? The Telecaster is FLAT on the top , FLAT on the bottom. The Stratocaster has nice big beveled surfaces where it fits against your body and where your arm rests on the top. Good work , VW. Now , just make that Fender(branded) stereo standard on a Golf with 1.4 Tsi , please.

Now if they put the 1.4 tsi engine in the Golf , which would probably not cost them a dime , I'd be interested. But I can see they are desperately trying to stay relevant (alive) in the NA marketplace , so maybe this will help them.

    Hi Edwin:

The 150 hp and 184 lb-ft. of torque 1.4L I4 TSI is an all-new engine and even more modern with an aluminum alloy block than the brand new third gen 2.0L EA288 with the cast iron block in the Tiguan! It was in the 2016 and 2017 Jetta but mated to a 5-speed MT (30/40 mpg city/highway) instead of a 6-speed MT. It disappeared into the weeds - overwhelmed - with all the TDI fracas.

The 18 Golf refresh was introduced without much fanfare in NY earlier this year. While it was updated n the exterior, some interior parts, and greatly improved infotainment, it carries on with the 170 hp and 199 pound-feet of torque (184 lb-ft with the 5-speed manual) 1.8L TSI and will probably arrive with a 25/35 mpg city/highway rating with either the 5-speed MT or 6-speed AT just as the 2017 was shod with. I sure wish the emphasis was on the 1.4L too because 25/35 is not really competitive with the likes of the segment leading 17 Civic hatch and its 176 hp and 162 lb-ft. of torque 1.5T rated at 31/40 with the CVT. :(

I suspect the Beetle and Golf along with the Jetta that already uses it will be offered with the 1.4L TSI in the not to distant future.
