[IMG] There is more yet to learn about the all-new upcoming Prius Prime PHEV-22.

    Wayne Gerdes – CleanMPG – May 4, 2016

2017 Toyota Prius Prime PHEV-22 with a 120 MPGe rating and an EV speed up to 84 mph introduced by Group VP and GM of Toyota USA, Bill Faye at the 2016 New York International Auto Show.

The all-new upcoming Prius Prime is built off the hyper-efficient Prius with a much larger plug-in hybrid pack and some drivetrain changes. Enough changes so that the heavier Prime when in hybrid mode will achieve efficiency equal to or better than the all-new 2016 Toyota Prius Liftback!

As Toyota stated at the reveal, “Prime” means best, making it the perfect name for one of the most technologically advanced, best-equipped Prius in the model’s history.

Making it a better car is the standard all-new 4th gen Prius hybrids Toyota New Generation Architecture (TNGA) high-strength chassis and double-wishbone independent rear end.

Inside the 2017 Toyota Prius Prime

Inside the Prius Prime is standard 60/40 folding rear seatbacks, sound-insulating laminated windshield and front door glass and the optimized aero shape that helps keep wind noise top a minimum.

The Prius Prime seating includes standard heated front seats, auto climate, and available SofTex trimmed seats. The climate control system is quieter, thanks to an electric compressor, and it’s smarter, focusing airflow only to areas where occupants are seated in order to help maximize fuel economy and comfort. The driver can activate the remote A/C system with an available key fob or smartphone app to cool the interior before entering the cabin.

The centrally mounted gauge panel appears to float above the dashboard. The panel features dual 4.2-inch full-color TFT (thin film transistor) multi-information displays, and the driver can change their content by using steering wheel controls. The display provides a multitude of readouts for hybrid energy information and more, and the driver can choose how much information to view.

The optional 11.6-inch, HD central multimedia screen with standard navigation and available full color head-up display are the interior highlights.

An available Entune Premium JBL Audio system with Integrated Navigation and App Suite puts 10 JBL GreenEdge speakers in six locations for sonic bliss. The Entune Multimedia Bundle includes AM/FM cache radio (letting you pause songs and play later), HD Radio, HD Radio predictive traffic and Doppler weather overlay, SiriusXM Satellite Radio with 3-month complimentary SiriusXM.

A USB 2.0 port with iPod connectivity and control, plus advanced voice recognition and hands-free phone capability, phonebook access and music streaming via Bluetooth are standard. For iPhone users, Siri Eyes Free mode is also standard.

The Entune App Suite adds Slacker Radio, iHeartRadio and Pandora as well as Destination Search, MovieTickets.com, OpenTable, Facebook Places, Yelp plus real-time traffic, weather, fuel prices, sports and stocks. Access to Entune services is subscription-free.

An available wireless cell phone Qi charger rounds out the cool stuff.

    2017 Toyota Prius Prime Safety

On the safety front, the “Prime” PHEV-22 will include Toyota’s Safety Sense P system that has already earned a 2016 IIHS Top Safety Pick and a 5-Strar Crash Test Rating on both the U.S. NHTSA and Euro NCAP crash test regimen.

The most fuel efficient car in the world is also proven safer than ever before.

    2017 Toyota Prius Prime Drivetrain

The Prius Prime allows you to plug in, gas up, or both. On one 11.3-gallon tank of regular-grade gasoline and a full electric charge, the 2017 Prius Prime anticipates a class-leading estimated total driving range of over 600 miles

The heavily atkinsonized 1.8L I4 is the same as that in the 2016 Prius hybrid with its 40 percent-plus thermodynamic efficiency. Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system with a cooler is smaller, lighter while a quieter hybrid system water pump and an exhaust heat recirculation system is standard.

The Prius Prime will also feature a Toyota-first dual motor generator drive system, using both the electric motor and the generator for driving the wheels. Regenerative braking continues to be a standard addition.

The Prius Prime charges in approximately 5.5 hours from a 120V outlet. Just over 2 from a Level2.

The 2017 Prius Prime will begin arriving in Toyota showrooms in late fall.

2017 Toyota Prius Prime PHEV FAQ

When can I buy Prius Prime? Prius Prime will be available at participating Toyota dealers in all 50 states in late 2016.

Do I need to plug in Prius Prime to use it? No, but it is generally advantageous to keep it charged. Depending on your electricity rate, you could save money by plugging it in. The more often you keep Prius Prime fully charged (at home, work or anywhere with a public charging station), the greater your gasoline fuel savings will be.

What is a plug-in hybrid? A plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHV) is similar to Prius, but with a larger battery and more powerful motors that allow it to run much longer in EV Mode. 7 You are in control and able to use less gas if you choose to plug it in either at home, at work or at a public charging station. If you don't want to plug it in, no problem, you can still drive the car in hybrid mode with great fuel economy.

What is MPGe? This helps compare the mileage of driving in electric mode to the commonly used MPG figure for gas vehicles. So by driving Prius Prime in electric mode, we project an estimated equivalent of 120 MPG. 4 The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) uses the MPG equivalent (MPGe) figure to convert the measurement of power used by plug-in hybrid vehicles, electric vehicles and others not powered by liquid fuels into something that resembles the more familiar MPG rating.

How long is Prius Prime's battery designed to last? The battery in Prius Prime is designed to last for the life of the vehicle.

Do I need gas in the tank? You should never drive Prius Prime without gasoline in the tank. While, under certain conditions, you may drive on electricity alone, the vehicle always requires gasoline to operate properly.

2017 Toyota Prius Prime Intro Advert

How does Prius Prime drive compared to a gasoline-powered vehicle? The electric motors of Prius Prime deliver a smoother start than a gas engine. Prius Prime performance is also boosted by Toyota's first dual motor drive system, delivering fun-to-drive acceleration that is smooth from the start, and even while driving at highway speeds.

What is the expected driving range? Prius Prime is projected to drive over an estimated 600 miles in total range 5 and have an EV range anticipated to be up to 22 miles 6 if only recharging once. If Prius Prime is kept fully charged, it allows the driver the ability to save and potentially use less gasoline, yet still have the total driving range and efficiency expected from a Prius.

What separates Prius Prime from other Prius models? Prius Prime works similarly to a standard Prius, but with an increased electric driving range, more powerful electric motors and enhanced fuel efficiency. It continues to set itself apart with a completely unique front and rear design. The advanced four-projector LED headlights, LED taillights and signals help light the night in a most dramatic and efficient fashion. The aerodynamically formed rear glass and hatch represents another leap forward. The carbon-fiber-reinforced construction is a Toyota first and results in a lightweight, easy-to-lift hatch.

How do I charge Prius Prime? You can easily charge Prius Prime's battery by plugging its included charging cord into a standard electrical outlet. No additional charging equipment is needed.

How long does it take to charge? Prius Prime's battery can be charged in 5.5 hours by plugging the included charge cable into a standard household outlet. When using a public charging station (240V), Prius Prime can be fully charged in just under 2.5 hours.

Do I need a special charger? Is the charging equipment included? No special charging equipment is required for Prius Prime. Prius Prime comes with a standard outlet charging cable. 8.

What type of fuel economy can I expect to get? EV Mode 7 helps maximize fuel efficiency with a manufacturer-estimated 120 MPGe.

If the Prius Prime can tow 1600 lbs and has an 'ATC' price of $25,xxx, it will make a compelling choice.

I just want a useful plug-in car that the average guy can afford.

    Am I asking too much?

The C-MAX Energi can be had near your price point. It is already very useful and efficient if you don't do a lot of high speed highway. The Fusion Energi is a few grand more. I have to believe the Prime should command more than the C-MAX.
