    Hi All:

What many of us have experienced on the interstate both with traffic side and surf, the U.S. military is adopting it as a strategy to save between 5 and 10 percent. It is huge!

Ages ago, I had understood that military aircraft flying in formation burned more fuel than when flying free, due to constant need to adjust throttles and control surfaces to maintain position within the formation. But their positions then were determined by military parade requirements, not by fuel efficiency.

Computer autopilot aiming for optimum wake surfing is probably significantly different than the old manual flying patterns.
