    Hi All:

I have been sitting at a McDonalds in Richmond, VA for almost 6 hours catching up with work after the epic 2015 Sonata ECO drive.

While there, I noticed how stupid fat and dilapidated my wallet is getting with all of the receipts stuffed in it. And I have a whole other pile of receipts in the car too!

Anyone remember the Seinfeld episode regarding George's wallet? That's me to a tee. :D

Hoping Marian gets me a new wallet for Christmas as this one was shot over a year ago. Hint hint dear.

    Hi All:

2015 Hyundai Sonata ECO: Planes, Trains, Automobiles and Rockets Conclusion.

Finishing up and said goodbye to the most comfortable and affordable long distance efficient cruiser available in the under $25k segment. That being the 2015 Hyundai Sonata‬ ECO.

Final drive results in mostly below freezing temps from HMMA in Montgomery to Washington DC were not bad at all.

The plane part of the trip arrives now and I would rather be driving.

The $50 Hyundai Sonata ECO Challenge: Planes, Trains, Automobiles and Rockets! Epilouge

What did we learn? Even in poor weather conditions the ECO performed very well. While some TDs and Hybrids may beat it in their respective environments, they cost quite a bit more upfront and in fuel (TDs :(). Hyundai is all about value and they succeeded in meeting that target with the latest all-new generation Sonata. This value play of the all-new Sonata in particular is a great example. It offered 50+ mpg while being a segment larger size than its main competitors and features the latest infotainment solutions. Remember Apple’s CarPlay and Android Auto are just around the corner. And comfortable beyond words. What other car in this segment would you jump in, drive almost 2,500 miles in 3.5 days, and be ready to take on another 2,500 miles before the weeks is out? Another good one from Hyundai and I cannot wait to drive it again someday soon.

PS: You are not going to eat at the world famous Zingerman's, see a world class collection of Corvette's, visit the Country Music Hall of Fame, or learn about rockets while sitting in 16 E at 34,000'. All the while paying multiple times the cost for the privilege. Life is an adventure and should not be wasted. If you have the spirit to get out there and explore, the 2015 Sonata ECO provides a cost effective way to do just that plus a whole lot more.

Wayne, thanks for the excellent trip report!

I blame it in no small part for my purchasing a 2015 1.6T Eco last month. It is a nice full size sedan that seems to be pretty frugal at 55-65mph on the freeway. 1 GPH is the goal again with this car.

    Hi SpartyBrutus:

Congrats on the most frugal full sized available.

Trying to get Marian warmed up to it but with the HEV drivetrain in fact.

Wayne, what are your thoughts on how to make this care shine as a daily driver? My wife just traded her 2003 Honda Accord 5MT in for a 2015 Sonata Sport with the 2.4L. What techniques and limits should be used to get the most out of it?

    Thanks

    Hi Jason:

I hope she does not have a lot of city driving. And she has to learn to glide it. It is big with a lot of inertia so allowing it to glide from high speed in gear and below 30 with N will help tremendously.

Love to see pics. There have been some fantastic deals on them the past few months. Still wish Marian wold see past her CUV mentality to consider one.

Thank you, I use that a lot and have aired up the tires so it glides better now. :0) She has a 30 minute highway drive both ways during the school year. However during the summer it is mainly around town. She is used to shifting to neutral to glide with her Accord 5MT, so she is just starting to feel out that shifting with this car.

I scanned through this whole thread but may have missed it.

How does the 7 speed DCT handle neutral coasting and the transition between neutral and back into gear?

the 6 Speed AT is pretty smooth. I go in and out of gear all the time in town when driving the wife's. The only jerkiness I feel is when going form Park to D when on any kind of incline. Also, when downshifting with the autostick it will sometimes jerk sometimes from 4th to 3rd or 2nd. But if you leave in D it is smooth in the down shift as well.

    Hi Jon:

It has been a while but I do not remember much in the way of jerkiness. We will have to take one out again this summer to see.

Still one of the best values in the mid-size segment imho.

    Hi All:

While the drive was within the ECO trim, the Sport trim has become a little more attractive with this addition.

    Hi All:

I was speaking with a fellow journalist about the 2016 Sonata SE price I posted in the Accord Hybrid story this morning. He said the Saonta Eco is available for < $21k in his area now. In LA, the value of this beauty - the 2016 Sonata Eco - at under $19k is unsurpassed.

    Hi All:

The 2017 Hyundai Sonata just earned a spot on KBB's "10 Most Awarded Cars of 2017" list. Hyundai was one of the “10 Most Awarded Brands of 2017,” with vehicles throughout its lineup being honored for their design, engineering, technology and value. In a crowded midsize-sedan market, the Sonata shines with its powerful engines, handsome styling, comfortable and quiet driving environment and wide array of standard features.
