    2014 Lexus RX 450h Review

The Pickup: Last week’s ride is courtesy of Lexus and arrived in the form of a 2014 Lexus RX 450h Hybrid. The $47,810 to start RX 450h is rated at 30/28/29 mpg city/highway/combined.

Pickup from O’Hare prior to the MAMA Spring Rally in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin.

Exterior appearance shows off a sleek CUV with a steeply raked windscreen and rear hatch glass. The now standard Lexus reverse trapezoidal black widow inspired spindle grille adds design flair missing in the previous generation. Not much on the profiles character line front but the Hybrid badged chrome strip and chrome trim day light opening added some class. Out back. Well, it is a big hatch.

Along with the numerous std. amenities, one really stands out. That being 10-airbags including the outboard rear sides. I like to see that in a new car meant for family activities.

Options include a high end Mark Levinson audio system ($995), top of the line NAVI incl. Lexus Enform, and backup camera ($2,775), and Premium pkg. which includes leather, bamboo wheel and trim, moonroof, power folding mirrors, BSM, and driver 3-memory seating, mirrors, and wheel.

All in including $910 D&H, she lists at $55,510.

You pay a lot but you get a lot for this Lexus trademarked badge.

First impressions? Very comfortable and soft leather driver’s seat with the right length lower seat cushion and minimal bolstering. Instrumentation layout is clean and the very tightly sewn headlined and pillar coverings are first rate. Something we saw in the ES 300h a few weeks ago.

A-pillar, headliner, and sun visor had the tightly stitched cloth covering.

I like the cloth covering luxurious look and feel just as much as Alcantara, leather, or suede in fact.

Pairing the Motorola RAZR MAXX HD is by far the easiest of any brand out there...

40.0 cu. ft. of cargo volume “behind” the rear seats is easily large enough for most families.

2014 Lexus RX 450h First Drive

O’Hare to home result in moderate Chicago area rush hour traffic and very warm temperatures. 84 to 90 degrees F warm.

2014 Lexus RX 450h first segment complete. Non calibrated but just OK.

Darn Safety Connect button instead of a sunglass holder. Wish this were not the case.

    Unexpected “Cool” features

Tilt out storage compartments in the door and a pen holder in the center console were nice touches.

Pen holder just in front of the center console armrest.

Absolutely love power folding mirrors. In the RX 450h, you can do it manually or have them fold in with every power down and they will fold out with the push of the Start button.

A little feature you may want on your next ride.

Stopped at my parents and picked up a passenger to go for a short ride to pick up pizza in the 14 Lexus RX 450h. Look closely as she likes it she likes it! Of course she likes anything that has to do with going for a ride. :)

The RX 450h can carry, haul, or tow a lot more than pizza but that is what most actually use their cars and trucks for.

2014 Lexus RX 450h - Fuel Economy calibration drive

Heading to the Midwest Automobile Media Association Spring Rally (#MAMASC14) in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. At this point I still have to do the map work for the odometer offset to come up with an actual mpgUS vs. aFCD final.

First top off fill at a Shell on Wi. 20 and I-94 in Racine, Wisc.

Final Top off to come up with a measured result at a Citgo in Elkhart Lake, Wisc.

The preliminary calcs do not portray a very fuel efficient vehicle which was an unexpected disappointment. 79.2 miles ÷ 2.179 gal reveals a 36.4 mpgUS result vs the OEM aFCDs 37.3 mpg display. I suspect the actual indicated will be very close once I complete the map work. A 37.x result for a modern day hybrid no matter what size is not good as all of the TD competitors will best this result by between 20 and 40 percent.

5 years ago the RX 450h and its sibling the Highlander Hybrid would have cleaned the segments clock. Today, it appears that they have been leapfrogged at the pump by the European TDs.

Lots to like about the 14 Lexus RX 450h but when pickup trucks and 10 year old CUVs rated at far less have achieved more; using a 3.5L ICE mated to a lightweight HSD system comes up short. The city and steady state tests could redeem her however. It is early however so let us see how she performs over the next few days with a little more city/suburban added to her repertoire vs. this 95% all-highway jaunt.

Calibration drive - Google Map route

81.4 miles on 2.179 gallons = 37.4 mpgUS actual compared to the 38.3 mpgUS indicated.

This is the first time a Toyota/Lexus vehicles aFCD came close to the actual mpg result. Way to go Lexus!

    Local stuff

No ice on Lake Michigan that I can see. ;)

Took the 14 Lexus RX 450h to Lake Michigan and afterwards a Marcus Cinema in Sturtevant, Wisc. Namely an Ultra Screen. Just $4.50 for seniors and $10.50 for adults. Matinee pricing.

RX 450h is just a wee bit over the 38 mpg mark so not great or bad for a 29 mpg combined rated luxury Hybrid CUV.

About the movie theatre: Powered reclining lounge seating, great sound, and great picture. And the movie? X-MEN Days of Future Past was exciting and has a hell of a cool ending if you are a fan of the X-MEN genre. Make sure you stay through the credits as there is an interesting preview of the next film. ;)

    Working it…

Midweek impressions: What I would like to see in the RX 450h CUV is the 200 HP total system output Camry/Avalon/ES hybrid drivetrain offered in a FWD format. The 3.5L when running is not very efficient and HSD is a tad too small for this CUVs mass.

During warm-up - we are talking temps in the 60s - I was receiving an average of just 10 mpg for the first two minutes. A great driver has to be behind the wheel to make up for this level EPA cold emissions reduction.

EPA: There are plenty worse emissions profiles from far dirtier sources than hampering automobile owners with the horrible fuel consumption warm-up hit.

Toyota's and Lexus' 3.5L Highlander, GS and now the RX hybrids are hit the hardest in my experience compared to their EPA ratings. 1/3 of the EPA combined for two minutes is not good.

No EV light to judge if the ICE has shut down and it takes far too many ms even when forcing it (after an S4 idle check of course). Have to use a ScanGauge to watch all of this detail in real time. Prius engineers need to be let loose on this bad boy as they could whip it into shape pretty quick. I think?

Just prior to steady states and max effort tests, she revealed her capabilities over the week long driving review as the aFCD continued to climb with more local and suburban driving.

40.1 mpg over 393.8 miles - 40.2 mpg actual over 404.7 miles actual.

Enough ranting about how the 2014 Lexus RX 450h does not hold a candle to the ES 300h. It is 02:00 am and time to knock out those steady states.

2014 Lexus RX 450h Steady State FE Tests

Given the 30/28 mpgUS city/highway rating for the AWD variant, I was not expecting much but it did break its EPA rating at a healthy 69.1 mph.

Brake pedal feel is mushy and to cancel CC, you need to really step into it. Too much tip in before disengagement so I will have to speak with some Toyota people about fixing this.

2014 Lexus RX 450h Maximum Effort

    10 laps of a 2-mile RT city loop…

Last few hours with the Lexus RX 450h this morning. 10 RT loops of my local city route proved the luxury AWD CUV can do some damage to its EPA. 67.9 mpg over 20.0 miles displayed is 68.1 actual over 20.6 miles. I used 1 bar of SoC from start to finish so more along the lines of 67.5 mpg actual. 51 to 53 degree temps at night with lights. Someone will surely top 70 in warmer temps.

All-in, Toyota/Lexus’ hybrid drive proves itself in an all-city environment once again. And not bad for a 4,650 pound luxury automobile.

A tip: Use the ECO marker as the ICE-On/Off threshold and mange your SOC through the central displays Energy screen and she'll provide.

    2014 Lexus RX 450h Safety

When a vehicles arrives equipped with a passive 10 standard air bags - Front, Side, Side Curtains, Driver and Passenger Knee, and rear passenger side air bags, and active front seats headrests – color me impressed.

On the active side, Toyota/Lexus’ std. safety functionality shines through as it includes ABS, VDIM, VSC, TC , BA, EBD, Smart Stop or Brake Override, Direct Tire Pressure Monitor System (TPMS), hold START/STOP button while driving: Engine will stop, but steering will not lock. It is even better. I tested the shut down time of the button and like the ES 300h we drive a few weeks back, there was no time delay.

2014 Lexus RX 450h IIHS Crash Test Ratings

    NHTSA Crash Test Ratings

The IIHS Small Overlap has not been performed and like many recent Toyota/Lexus’, I think you can imagine why. Toyota has reworked the 14 Camry, Prius liftback, and all-new 14 Highlander to achieve a Top Safety Pick + rating whereas many other models in the Toyota/Lexus lineup are still being reworked. I am not sure where the 2014 and now 2015 RX 450h stands in this regard. When a rating is released, I will be sure to follow up with an update within this review write-up.

    Final Impressions

The positives: I was hard on her capabilities earlier but now I have to give the genius's from Japan some credit. 67 + max effort, 40.3 actual over 400 + miles of 65 percent highway and 35 percent suburban, and in the steady states, breaking its 28 mpg highway rating at 69.1 mph. That is not bad at all.

The faux NuLuxe leather is soft and pliable, seat comfort and ergonomics are pretty good, the displays are clean and legible, and the steering is quick enough.

Add to it the long term reliability of Lexus and you would not be making a mistake if you were looking for a class leading mid to high end luxury CUV.

The negatives: Warm-up hit is still atrocious. No EV light indicating ICE shutdown, brake travel to disengage CC is excessive, initial brake tip in is spongy, and the transition from regen to mechanicals is still not linear. The Mark Levinson system is not comparable to many base systems in other lux cars, and body roll is excessive in hard cornering. Wish the rear view camera had dynamic guidelines instead of just a straight up rear view through the large display. It also lacks dual aFCDs for both trips.

The passenger volume of 99.7 cu. ft. shows itself not in the hip and shoulder room but rear seat room. Leg room was at a premium in the back after my standard front seat adjustment and jump into the rear seat passenger location.

If it had just another 2 inches. Shoulda, woulda, coulda.

Did I forget to mention it needs a sunglass holder in the worst way again? Lexus, you can spend the $5.00 and make it happen as there is plenty of room on the upper console for the SOS button.

Looking up to the Safety Connect system with SOS button but no sunglass holder. :(

Just minutes before she was picked up and driven away. :(

Cleaned and vacuumed out the 2014 Lexus RX 450h interior just minutes before being picked up.

Luxuriously appointed, reliable as a bank vault, and fuel efficient beyond what I had first thought it was capable of.

While not a sports CUV by any means, Lexus has soft locked up. More owners want a little soft than super tight handling, highly bolstered seats, and stiffer ride. While I wished for a more European experience from behind the windscreen, I am not going to argue with Toyota/Lexus sales volumes. They build a CUV for soccer moms and standard family duty, not automobile enthusiasts. And rightfully so imho.

Did I mention the lack of a sunglass holder one more time?

Thank you Lexus for a very interesting week as there is a lot to like about the 2014 and now 2015 Lexus RX 450h.
