2014 Audi TDI Clean Diesel lineup in our nation’s capital just a few short weeks ago.

The 2014 Audi Q5, A6 and A7 TDI quattros are about to set off on a record setting adventure. And CleanMPG members are on board to give you the blow by blow.

Oh boy. It was almost a year ago and just a week before the LA Auto Show when we reported on a new Clean Diesel offering in the form of an all-new 3.0L V6 TDI mated to the epitome of luxury, the Audi A8. Audi Luxury Meets Diesel Efficiency with the tag line “Finally a bevy of Audi’s we can sink our own teeth into!

That November I was attending the Audi press conference during the LA Auto Show Press days when President and CEO of Audi of America, Scott Keough, doubled down on Audi’s promise of Clean Diesel in the United States.

This presentation was not your ordinary Press Days fluff speech. It was a declaration that Audi was going to make the most aggressive push into the fuel efficient North American marketplace in the company’s history. And not just in a few of their products but across much of their lineup. I can place words on a page but if you had heard Scott that day, there was Audi TDI passion embedded into his every word, phrase and paragraph. After that speech, I knew Audi was going to provide something good not just for the luxury buyer but good for everyone else too. Here are a few excerpts regarding Audi’s and our own reasons for clean diesel choice.

    Scott Keough:
After that motivating speech, I was thinking that for the first time a luxury marque was going to offer a fuel efficient choice beyond that of a hybrid. Given our experience with the modern day turbo diesel from the first drive of the 2007 European Civic iCDTi to our most recent Guinness World Record exploits in the 2013 Volkswagen Passat TDI, nothing can touch them when driven in the manner we all know how ;)

Which brings us to the present…

    Truth in 48

Less than three months ago I was contemplating how much I was looking forward to the upcoming release of the Audi A6, A7 and Q5 TDIs. In preps for Audi’s all-new 3.0L V6 TDI reveals in Washington DC, an idea crossed my mind… It was one of those I could not let go.

What if we were to take one of the Luxury Sports offerings for a drive? The drive however was to cross a Continent in < 48 hours and at > than its EPA highway.

I pulled the maps, began some initial planning and after a few hours, I thought this is more than doable, it would be extraordinary if we could pull it off!

Along similar lines and while at another reveal in NY City, a group of automobile journalists were on a shuttle bus from the presentation venue back to the hotel. I was speaking with a heavy hitter in our industry about the drive and if they would like to participate as a guest journalist. This conversation was held within earshot of the bus driver. During a pause in the conversation, the driver turned around and said,
I knew this drive was something special when an everyday working man provided that insight.

Being able to drive the 2014 Q5, A6, A7 and A8 L TDI Clean Diesels in and around our nation’s Capital provided us with real world higher average speed fuel economy numbers that turned the possibility into a reality.

The following tweet I sent out from the passenger seat of the 2014 A8 L TDI in Washington DC said it all:
A few weeks of e-mail planning correspondences between Audi of America’s Communication team and CleanMPG members and this world record setting drive is a go.

The latest advanced automotive technology in terms of interior and exterior design, interior comfort with the latest luxury materials and appointments, the most advanced chassis and suspension design of any luxury auto maker is mated to the most powerful and fuel efficient 3.0L V6 TDI we have been afforded to drive.

Without going into too much more detail than we have already provided in the previews and Pricing, Options and Specification sheets linked below, let us just say these vehicles are over the top quick (5.5 to 6.5 seconds to 60 mph) while providing confidence inspiring handling and fuel economy capability (we have experienced over 50 mpg from the A6 TDI on a short slower speed round trip drive loop) that a 4,200 – 4,500 pound automobile should not be capable of achieving.

    The Route

The Audi TDI Clean Diesel(s) Star In The “Truth in 48”

Audi Pacific, the largest and Gold LEED certified Audi dealership on the entire West Coast, is where we will congregate tomorrow morning. From there to a Shell on Normandie Ave and the I-405 for top offs and tank seal installation. From the time we start our engines, the clock starts and we are on our way.

The Audi Q5 TDI at Audi Pacific yesterday.

We will be passing through Los Angeles, Barstow, Flagstaff, Albuquerque, Amarillo, Oklahoma City, St. Louis, Indianapolis, Columbus, Allentown and finishing up in the Big Apple as we cross the George Washington Bridge and hopefully all in less than 48 hours.

Shell Diesel Refueling stops between LA and NY City will occur in Gallup, NM, El Reno, OK, Effingham, IL, and Clayton, OH.

Terrain? Beginning at just above sea level (ASL) we will be climbing to the Cajon Pass, a mountain pass on the I-15 between the San Bernardino Mountains and the San Gabriel Mountains in Southern California that tops out at over 4,000 ft. We will then descend to the Southern California desert only to climb back to over 7,200 ft. in Flagstaff, AZ and again on each side of Albuquerque, NM. From there, it is a pedal to the metal (light application anyway ;)) while crossing the southern Plaines as we make our way east. As we pass St. Louis’ famous arch, it will not be the “Gateway to the West” monument as it is commonly referred to but our “Gateway to the East” as we begin the last third of our journey with heavier traffic and more road construction…

A little mountain climb testing in an Audi TDI last night...

We will complete our journey at the Shell just across the George Washington Bridge (GWB) in NY City and immediately afterwards make our way to Audi of Manhattan, the largest Audi dealership on the East Coast.

    Refueling?

Yup. It will look like NASCAR with the four individuals in each car having specific tasks they need to accomplish in what I hope is less than 12-minutes. That includes the tank seal cutting, refueling itself, and new tank seal installation plus cleaning the windscreen, hitting the Shell for additional food and drink cravings, and of course the mandatory relieving oneself.

They are scheduled to occur at the following locations:

    Shell Diesel
    19008 Normandie Avenue
    Torrance, CA 90502-1009

    ***********************************
Torrance to Gallup – 667 miles

Gallup to El Reno – 655 miles
    ***********************************

    Shell Diesel
    2601 Country Club Road
    El Reno, OK. 73036

    ***********************************
El Reno to Effingham – 618 miles
    ***********************************

Shell Diesel at TravelCenters of America
    1702 West Evergreen Avenue
    Effingham, IL 62401
    (217) 347-7183

    ***********************************
Effingham to Clayton – 243 miles
    ***********************************

Wish the team luck as we are going to need it!

Sounds like a delicate balance of 1.speed, 2.caffeine, and 3.rest-stops will be needed to keep this 3 legged stool from tipping over.

A three relay team cross country road rally of 2803 miles with four refueling stops plus four driver swapping-rest stops interspersed (for about every 300 miles/5 hours) OR an estimated 8 stops for a overall total pitstop time of about 2 to 3 hours -- if drivers don't stop for anything else) - this leaves about 46 to 45 hours to complete this rally which suggest an average speed of about 61 to 63 mph.

May the wind be always be behind you and the highways be dry and smooth.

    Good Luck

If there are three cars hypermiling in a group - one car can take the lead while the other two draft behind in it - to balance out the fuel mileage every so often one of the cars from behind takes the lead. because all three cars are cooperating, driving in synch, and link together by a phone line - it is not as dangerous.

It's cool you have Jill. I've emailed her a couple of times and offered to show her what a diesel can really do if it's driven properly but never heard back. In light or moderate traffic I can usually beat the EPA by 10-15 MPG. 55-60 MPG is quite doable in a Passat.

Things are going great in the Q5. Factor in the fact this vehicle weighs almost 4500 lbs, about 1000 lbs worth a man, and a fairly packed hatch, this vehicle is maintaining between 36 to 40 mpgs!

Completed the first fuel stop and the rest stop after that. Currently in Texas getting ready for a quick pit stop and the switching of the guard. I had to pick up the pace in order to make the 48 hour deadline. Hitting speeds of 75, not normal CleanMPG fashion, but we have all been able to make at least 40 mpg.

You only need to average 60 mph to make this trip in 48 hours. Obviously the issue isn't the speed it is the number of stops and their duration that is causing this problem.

Piece of advice from someone who loves driving long distance by himself. DO NOT drink anything but plain unflavored water during this trip. It will cut your bathroom breaks in half.

There you go. All 3 legs of the stool balanced in one beverage choice.

(I wondered if a "road astronaut" diet was discussed prior to launch? (Another option would be to pick up a case of Depends -- all 'depends' on how much you like your Pepsi, I guess)

    add,..

Stating the obvious here I suppose, but; I would avoid Ms. Caffeine, Miss Sugar, Mr.Spicy and Mr. Greasy. Assuming this is a gas station diet I'd go for a plain sandwich (ham and cheese), water, banana (maybe just 1/2). If I had to to have something sweet, then gum or life savers. And then maybe a packet of tylenol for the withdrawal symptoms.

You may want to build up some MPG/MPH margin in the wee hours tonight, since you'll be dealing with rush hour tomorrow AM and NYC traffic tomorrow afternoon.
