    Hi All:

    I picked up a 2014 Audi Q5 TDI this afternoon just outside of LAX for a week long review. The Price as tested Q5 TDI is $51,445 which includes $46,500 for the vehicle, $500 for the Glacier White paint, $3,550 for the Audi MMI NAVI Plus package which includes the Audi NAVI, Audi Connect, Audi Parking System, and rear view camera plus $895 D&H.

    The dealership listed on the Monroney is Libertyville, IL which is the location of the nearest Audi dealership from my home in Wadsworth, IL.

    EPA is 24/31 mpgUS city/highway which we are going to test to its limits… Just like our drives of it the Q5 TDI in Washington DC and the Cross Continent during the #AudiTDI #TruthIn48 Challenge, it should easily break its EPA.

    Let us see how this works out in heavy afternoon LA Rush hour…

    I’d say the 2014 Audi Q5 TDI drive worked out well once again given the conditions. ;)

    Yes, I could go for this 4x4. Great fuel efficiency for this size and performance. I could probably get 40 where my much smaller Rav4 gets 25. Pop, pop, pop, Wayne! I bet you about idled the whole trip.

    51mpg!! And this 4500 lb vehicle can still go 0-60 in 6 seconds if needed. Fantastic engine.

    Hi Roger:

    No paddle shifters on this Q5 TDI but that does not mean the Tiptronic was not being used to force a higher gear than it wanted to be during a few accelerations. ;)

    What I found amazing is it held 8th locked up all the way down to 39 mph and about 1,050 RPM at one point in moderate slow traffic during one stretch. Was ready to go after the lever but did not have to.

    Mike, the German turbo diesels are scary good. Here in Southern California, I wonder why people do not drive a hybrid or super diesel given the types of traffic either moving at 15 or 75 mph.

    From the #AudiTDI #TruthIn48 Challenge, taken somewhere in MO after the fill in OK, showing 42.7 average at a very lofty average speed, and 49 iFCD at just over 70mph.

    The 51+ result is excellent and shows how much is left on the table when vehicles are driven at higher speeds.

    And it's a good thing Chris didn't have any pictures when I had to play "catch up" to the rest of the convoy and we still got ridiculous numbers. The Audi's were able to perform at what I consider "real-world" conditions and still excel.

    2014 Audi Q5 TDI Review

    A commute into downtown San Diego on Thursday lead to the following:

    45.2 mpg over 17.5 miles - 46 mpg actual with a 200 ft. descent going in and looping the parking area.

    Hi All:

    I took the 2014 Q5 TDI out to complete the Speed vs. FE data collection runs earlier today. Temps were 67 – 69 degrees F with winds out of the west at 5 to 10 mph on the north and southbound drive segments.

    Like quite a few German automobiles, 50 mph means 50 mph, 60 mph means 60 mph, and 70 mph means 70 mph on CC. 70 mph cycled to 71 mph on the Garmin a few times so the speedometer reads just slightly low as speeds go beyond 70 mph.

    RPM@60 mph came in at 1,439, just 22 RPM over the calculated 1,417 RPM.

    This big turbo diesel does not waver. When the TC is locked up, its locked up and there is simply no change from 50 mph all the way up. Another reason to love these darn TDs as they are so easy to drive without wavering RPMs and engine note change.

    Linearly, the Q5 TDI crosses its EPA highway rating of 31 mpg at a very healthy 77.5 mph. This is the second highest speed crossing of an EPA we have ever tested and sits only behind the Guinness World record earning VW Passat TDI with a stick!

    And to think, even with that "endurance run", we still netted the highest % over EPA between the 3 cars.
