    2014 Audi A7 TDI Review

    2014 Audi A7 TDI Review

    Up front and personal.

    Hi All:

Today I am privileged to be driving a very well equipped 14 Audi A7 TDI… As in the Prestige trim with the 240 hp and 428 lb-ft. of torque 3.0L V6 TDI mated to the wide ratio spread 8-speed AT with Tiptronic.

    2014 Audi A7 TDI

The 2014 A7 engenders an emotion of speed while when not even moving. This design
is being replaced by an even sleeker model in just a few short months from now!

Together they offer up a stunning for its size 24/38 mpg city/highway rating. It also arrived with almost every fixing that can be attached.

An immensely powerful 3.0L V6 TDI resides under the Four Rings cowling.

CleanMPG members have taken the A7 TDI from LA to NY City in < 48-hours at 43 mpg so we know what it is capable with the hammer down. Ok, maybe a small hammer but you get the idea. Yet I have always been curious what this beautiful piece of rolling artwork was worth when taking a drive in a far more relaxed fashion. And hopefully we are going to find that out.

Darn overcast day is not allowing this beauty to show off its lines. :(

It arrived with a base price of $66,900 and included the following “amenities”.

But first off for those of you that have not driven one of the Super Audi TDIs before, the base model is like spending a night with your spouse at a Four Seasons Resort. Meaning the guest services valet your car, they run you up to your room in an electric golf cart; they start the fire, and are at your beckon call 24/7. The 2014 Audi A7 TDI is like that. And that is before the extras are added.

    Nice looking rear end.

Std. features include real Aluminum trim around exterior windows, a power tailgate open/close with hands-free release, adaptive rear spoiler (first time I saw it I thought it was cool but not very practical), heated windshield washer nozzles, four-zone automatic climate control. That is right, FOUR zone! Power tilt and telescopic wheel, PWs with one-touch up/down on all, sunroof, Auto-dimming rear view, and real aluminum door sill inlays, and efficient adaptive xenon plus headlights with LED daytime running lights.

The seats are leather that adjust twelve-ways including four-way power lumbar adjustment. It also includes 60/40 fold down rear seatbacks, heated front seats, driver seat memory and the really cool force ventilated front seats.

On the infotainment front, it includes everything through a motorized pop up 7” display. Probably the only area that could use an upgrade is the size of the screen.

A look inside the Audi A7 TDI.

This Audi A7 TDI arrived with the following “Extras”:

Glacier White paint ($500), Prestige trim (2,900), Driver Assistance package ($2,800) which includes Audi pre sense plus, Audi active lane assist, Corner view camera system, Power-adjustable, power-folding, auto-dimming, heated exterior side mirrors with memory, and Audi’s adaptive cruise control with stop & go.

19" Sport package ($1,000) with Sport suspension calibration, three-spoke multifunction sport steering wheel with shift paddles, 19" 5-double-spoke design wheels with 255/40 all-season tires.

    Shift lever and controls detail.

It is also up charged with the 20" Sport package ($500) with 20" 10-parallel-spoke design wheels with 265/35 summer performance tires. These 20" summer performance sport tires are not conducive to big numbers by any means.

The coup de grâce placing all other audio systems in its rear view, the Bang & Olufsen Advanced Sound System ($5,900). Unfortunately the SiriusXM subscription has run out so I am screwed on that front.

2014 Audi A7 TDI - Bang and Olufsen system detail

    The motorized pop up tweeters.

All totaled incl. $895 D&H, the A7 TDI lists at $81,395.

First impressions. It is like driving a very fuel efficient bank vault. Light diesel clatter at low speeds and idle (when Auto Stop/Start has not engaged), and quiet once over 10 to 15 mph. Great seating thanks to 12-way adjustable setup and long reach telescopic wheel. Could use a lower cushion extender however. Soft leather and most everywhere, not just where you touch, is soft touch with real leather or high quality cloth/metallic trim. Upper area of the doors where your elbow "might" rest is a bit hard. Switches are all back lit and the high end stereo system with HD FM sounds fantastic.

NAVI with Google Earth, junction views, PSL, and elevation detail on the main display. I like that!

Everything I want and everything I need. ;)

Even the press fleet handler pulled over 40 from where they drove it from?

    First Drive

CATA to Home during Chicago rush hour: 53.2 mpg indicated over 44.1 miles and a 48 mph avg. speed.

I will need to do a wee bit better than this if I am going to make it to the Cape Cod without refueling. ;)

    Hi All:

I was going to perform a quick topoff of the 14 Audi A7 TDI at a local She tonight before the fully involved top off tomorrow before the #ChasingLeMans drive and guess what I saw?

2014 Audi A& TDI quattro Review

Contains Biomass derived diesel or biodiesel in quantities between 5 percent and 20 percent.

It appears that we will never be refueling a turbo diesel car in IL ever again. Trucks can handle B20 but only the Cruze TD on the car side of the aisle.

Please heed the warning. Max B5 means Max B5 in the modern day TD. Stupid IL. politicians. :(

The 2014 Audi A7 TDI gets its first drink of good ULSD diesel from a Shell just across the IL/WI border on I94 and Hwy 50. To bad about Illinois diesel being tainted statewide.

Well, that's a problem. What are new diesel owners expected to do? Void their warranty and smile?

    Hi Tim:

Audi/Porsche, and VW are on top of this. They reduced the oil change intervals to account of the Biodiesel dilution. Still an expensive workaround and screwed over the consumer but the warranty is not voided.

2014 Audi A7 TDI quattro Review

    Hi All:

    The test…

2014 Audi A7 TDI quattro Review

    14 A7 TDI quattro and 10 Prius.FWD.

    2014 Audi A7 TDI quattro (24/38/29 mpg city/highway/combined) vs. 2010 Toyota Prius (51/48/50 mpg city/highway/combined)

A quick back to back two direction highway and city test with the 2014 Audi Q7 TDI quattro and a 2010 Prius.

The Audi performed far better on a percentage basis vs. its EPA…

The 2010 Toyota Prius had non OEM tires. The 2014 Audi A7 TDI quattro has 20” Continental Extreme Contact summer performance tires. I’d give the Prius the nod despite it having garbage tires.

I used the Audi’s Radar CC to maintain the same following distance. I used 4-bars (3-sec.) when the road was wide open on the downhill highway test. I had to close it up to 3 bars (2-sec.) when traffic was near for the second uphill highway test.

The test location: I-295 South for the downhill highway test and I-295 North. The city test occurred from the I-295 and RI-7 off ramp to the suburbs of North Providence, RI.

First downhill with tailwind highway test

75 to 77 degrees F with a 10 mph tailwind. The elev. from initial aFCD reset to the final displays was 250’ down to 60’.

2014 Audi A7 TDI quattro (54.1 mpg displayed and 52.1 mpg actual)
2010 Toyota Prius (58.1 mpg displayed and 55.2 mpg actual)

Second uphill with headwind highway test

2014 Audi A7 TDI quattro (42.1 mpg displayed and 40.5 mpg actual)
2010 Toyota Prius (43.9 mpg displayed and 41.7 mpg actual)

    City test

From the off-ramp we reset the aFCDs. The elev. delta was overall downhill from 290’ to 215’ with a 410’ elev. crest between the off-ramp and the final stop. To keep the Prius’ SoC out of the equation, we started off with 6-bars and 56 percent (ScanGauge X-Gauge). The Prius finished at 6-bars and actually more SoC 60 percent.

2014 Audi A7 TDI quattro (48.8 mpg displayed and 47.0 mpg actual)
2010 Toyota Prius (93.3 mpg displayed and 88.6 mpg actual)

    2014 Audi A7 TDI quattro – AWD with a 0 to 60 in 5.5 seconds - EPA 24/38/29 mpgUS city/highway/combined.
    2010 Toyota Prius – FWD with a 0 to 60 in 9.6 seconds - EPA 51/48/50 mpgUS city/highway/combined.

    Column1Column2Column3Column4
Test regimenAudio A7 TDI quattro mpgUS resultToyota Prius mpgUS resultPercent over/under EPA
    Downhill w/ tailwind highway52.355.2+37.6%/+15.0%
    Uphill w/ headwind highway40.741.7+7.1%/-13.1%
    City47.288.6+96.6%/+73.7%

We also performed a number of Speed vs. FE crossover tests. With any type of headwind or undulating terrain consisting of 1 to 2 percent grades back to the same elevation, the Prius fell behind the Audi at just 62 mph. In more flatter terrain or with a tailwind, the crossover point was approximately 68 mph.

    Conclusions

For one, this is not really an apples to apples comparison as the Audi is a luxury performance sports car equipped with a 240 hp and 428 lb-ft. of torque 3.0L V6 and AWD while the Prius is a lightweight 134 hop combined FWD high fuel economy commuter with little in the way of amenities.

While the 50 mpg Prius bested the 29 mpg Audi A7 in all realms, as loads increase, the Audi A7 TDI quattro almost bested the Fuel Economy champ in the uphill into the wind segment. When moving into the city result, note what the big luxury sports sedan did to its EPA city rating by comparison to the most fuel efficient city/highway vehicle available in North America.

Where the Audi A7 TDI began to outpace the Prius was the real eye opener given the AWD power and performance of the Audi.

As shown in the #TruthIn48, the EPA does a number on the turbo diesels with far lower EPA results displayed on their Monroney than non-hybrid and hybrid gasoline fueled counter parts.

Given the recent Ford double restatements, maybe the EPA needs to get out of the Monroney sticker results game. The EPA testing (done by the manufacturers) provides a huge disservice to consumers by giving them a false impression and comparison in which they believe their gasoline powered car or trucking is going to receive better fuel economy than it actually does while Turbo Diesel drivers know they will do better.

Is the EPA even interested in lowing the nations fuel consumption or is it interested in selling less fuel efficient cars?

All in, I believe the 2014 Audi A7 TDI quattro should be rated at 43 to 44 mpg highway, not just 38 mpg as the EPA testing results requires.

Turn out after testing on interstate 295 in RI with medium terrain, the Audi seems to get better fuel economy starting around 68 mph.

That or load a bunch of MP3s on a stick, Pandora or other internet radio, or just the plain radio. I personally hate XM as I feel that it degrades the sound quality too much.

I personally hate XM because they pay manufacturers to get into the stereo in new cars and so car owners end up with unnecessary menu options, annoying phone calls and then junk mail.

(Audi A7 TDI) Also not bad considering you get AWD.

So what happened to the IL --> Cape Cod drive? Did the fuel situation
kill that or the write-up's coming when there's time to write?

    Thanks!

Audi A7 named Best Model in Strategic Vision and ALG Total Value Index

    Hi All:

Owners of the Audi A7 helped name it the Best Model overall in the newly released 2014 Total Value Index (TVI) study, presented by Strategic Vision and ALG. The A7 also topped the Luxury Car category.

The Total Value Index weighs the customer experience against financial factors such as cost of ownership and resale value for an overall total vehicle score. The study examined the complete ownership experience of more than 46,173 new car buyers. The customers’ assessment accounted for several factors, including expected reliability, MPG, price paid, resale and innovation. This information was balanced with industry-leading Residual Value information provided by ALG. The Total Value Index was calculated from buyers who purchased 2014 models during October 2013 to March 2014.

The Audi A7 blends progressive design, advanced technology and versatility. The vehicle is powered by either the 3.0L TFSI direct-injection V6 supercharged engine or 3.0L TDI turbo diesel engine, both mated to Audi’s award winning quattro AWD system standard.

The A7 model line also features some of Audi’s most advanced technology and driver assistance features.
