Road Trip for battery?

I'm now seriously considering purchasing the charger, harness and discharger. I prefer the idea of spending just under a grand on the tools to regain and maintain a healthy pack versus spending 3 times that for a new pack that may end up in the same situation. I'm doing all the reading I can and viewing the videos that are available.

My only concern is that should anything associated with the IMA system go out, Honda wouldn't cover it because of the "alterations "

Then again, I had 5 recals today in 30 miles of driving around town and I don't know how much more I can take of it. I miss my car when it worked properly.

Besides the warranty concerns you mention, I'm also concerned that I'd be flogging a dead horse.

Rolls Royce would be to get a new battery, then start GC'ing it regularly. Depending on how much money you want to throw at Honda's folly.

FWIW, I once picked up a dinner tab for around $2700. Guess it's all relative.

Another thought: I wonder what Re-Involt thinks of GC'ers, or if they might even install a harness when they've got it on the bench.

Very good question... I've been living in a state of nearly continual re-cal for a while now, and still no IMA light. About 10k left before my HondaCare warranty gives out, and I'm pretty much set on installing the GC at 120k regardless of whether I miraculously get a light (and "new" pack) before then or not. If the GC doesn't bring me back to respectable mpg, it'd be nice to know whether or not ReInvolt could put the harness on for me before the new pack leaves their shop.

    Will do.

With ours warranty is 'till December (8 year or 160K kilometer), but I'm not sure we'll hold off that long. For one thing, since fall of '05 was the first year, there might be a swamp of order around fall of this year, pent up demand.

Check out the podcast What Drives Us, episode 86. It has Mike Dabrowski discussing his charger as well as an HCH II owner/hypermiler that has the harness install and GC. After listening to it, I'm sold. I'll be sending Mike the check tomorrow. I highly recommend the podcast to anyone having frequent recals and considering purchasing a GC.

I'm hopeful that this will extend the battery for years to come with no recals.

^ Wow! Good luck with that, I'm sure you'll post how it works out.

I'm having a hard time with that, any search results are freaking out my Norton protection. Do you have link?

Try xxx for the webpage, and this for the direct MP3 link

Edit: Though my AV didn't report anything (linux?), I've de-linked the main page just in case

I can download the mp3 from the second link, but the first link trips AVG as a virus.. you are probably infected so it does not bother you :)

That web site has a Trojan! If your computer didn't detect it you got it!

I use ESET which is the best Anti Virus at the moment.

It's kind of comic opera here. One minute we're discussing serious stuff, and then someone's hair catches on fire, figuratively speaking. Jess, I hope you survived, LOL. Anyway:

When I had the ReInvolt guy on the phone he asked about the 12 volt's state. With the car on hand I'd checked it, and the voltage was lowish, likely due in part to a left on map light nearly draining it a while back.

Long story short, we replaced the 12 volt last weekend (with stock Honda battery), mainly because it's days appeared numbered, but also to see what that would do for the IMA situation. I'd meant to save the memory during the swap, hooked up 0.5 amp trickle for that reason, but then forgot to plug it into the 110 volt (smack head).

Maybe a blessing in disguise? I know MSantos always advocated a "reboot", by disconnecting the 12 volt occasionally.

Since the 12 volt battery swap last Sunday, apart from one recalibration at the outset (which it maybe has to do, due to battery disconnect?), my son tells me it's behaving, no recal's since. He was talking to me during a fairly lengthy drive, likely paying attention to the signs.

Another development: got a call from Honda in response to my email (what is wrong with that statement?). They wanted to talk to my son, which makes sense, he is the owner. The message was basically "if you want to discuss further". Not sure what I make of that, neutral, negative?

He called today, and of course was only able to leave a message, and 2~4 hours later no call back.

    Will post the outcome.

Mendel, I only sent Mike the check this past Tuesday, so I do not have the charger or the discharger yet. Bottom line, I'm still alive. Although my 12V is two years this month, my recals have been occurring since last year.

I'm glad to hear that so far it sounds like the 12V swap is making a difference.

^ You misunderstand, I though you might be cyberly dead, eaten by a Trojan, LOL.

I don't think the 12 volt swap is going to make much difference, just playing the sceptic. I know the recals have been going on with ours for 3 ~4 years, steadily getting more frequent. But I'll take what I can get.

LOL, I see. How could I miss that? Most everything I do is on my iphone so I don't have much to worry about there.

I'll try to take lots of pics when I have the equipment as well as the install.

I stumbled on the following blog. He has an electric Fit and a HCH II. He had his HV pack on the Civic replaced at around 67k miles. Although, like one of the comments suggests, I have a feeling he got it replaced because he has an electric Fit and Honda didn't want to 'rock the boat'?

Thanks for that link, Jess. Very interesting, very typical. This is interesting:

Here one from my son, in jest; I'm paraphrasing a little, haven't got access to the actual text here:

Excerpt from IMA maintenance software code:

IF ODOM < 160000 AND/OR TIME < 8 YR | RTN OK OTHERWISE RTN IMA ERROR

Yeah after all the pushbacks that I've read of other people's dealer experiences, I'm going to save myself the hassle and frustration of dealing with them.

I'm very anxious for the charger though. I had 2 recals this morning before I even got to my destination.

Uhh... if that is actually in the code, and someone can prove it, CARB is going to be incredibly honked off... that piece of pseudo-code basically means "Unless your odo is above 160k AND the car is 8 years old or older, NEVER trigger an IMA code."
