Re: 2013 VW Passat TDI Specifications

Alright, have another update from Wayne.

He called it quits north of Louisville, KY last night due to plunging temperatures. He headed out this morning with calm winds around 10 am. He made the northward turn sooner than anticipated due to strengthening south winds. He is now headed north on Route 130 and is near Olney, IL with a solid tail wind ~ 10 mph. The winds will start to shift SW as the day progresses and as he moves northward.

As of the segment 20 mi N of Louisville to Olney, IL - 84.0 MPG
The tank is at 84.2 / 495 miles - that mileage is likely short. Wayne guesses it is closer to 520, due to the iFCD self-resetting a few times, if I heard him correctly.

The plan is for him to head north until the winds shift with the approaching front. he is hoping to make it to Green Bay, WI, or the north tip of Lake Michigan if possible. It depends on the timing of the front and where the winds shift to northerly. Luckily, there isn't any precipitation ahead of the front, so that is much in his favor. I should have more from him later this evening.

I'm just hoping that the FCD is accurate. It's usually very close to actual for average driving but we found that when going advanced with lots of FASing in a Jetta a few years ago, it was optimistic.

Re: 2013 VW Passat TDI Specifications

    Hi Mike:

We'll know pretty soon ;) I had a DPF regen at 360 miles out and it lasted all of 3 miles. No hit to the aFCD but I think the extra injected fuel was not being counted??? It occurred in a hilly section just as I began a long downhill and some of that was in Fuel cut. Trip 1 aFCD was something like 75.x and still climbing form the warm-up hit at the time and finished up near the same with 3 downhill’s and two uphill’s.

    Brandon Thanks!

Here is the Google map and the route linked.

The OEM Odometer is reporting short by 1.387%. This is actually really really close considering the advanced nature of this drive.

And here is tank (Trip 2) as it sits in the drive with 9/16 of a tank still left.

I have a lot more to post and upload but I will catch some sleep first ;)

    Hi Rich:

When you are traveling as far as the Passat did in the last 36 hours at between the limits, I need every tell tale sign that I am ahead. I bought some reflective tape from Menard's, cut it up and stuck it on. A bit amateurish but it appears to work.

Here are a few more before I post the detailed ones tomorrow.

Top off, Trip reset, Trip 1 reset and Trip 2 reset.

To top off, I topped off once, drove the car in a hard 7-mile loop and re-topped it off again. It took another .7 gallons after this including the standard shaking the car and allowing the foam to dissipate?

I am not sure why this tractor was shooting dirt into the air but here it is? Anyone have any idea what this famer was doing?

Can anyone edit the wires out as I liked the shot but my amateur skills showed color imperfections when I tried to remove them?

The real thing - Photoshop. Clone stamp to copy blue sky over the lines, then Heal to blend the slight irregularities.

The lines were going from the top left corner to halfway down the right side.

    Hi All:

    A few of yesterdays details…

IL/WI border to ~ 20 miles North of Louisville, KY.

    Chicago Sunday afternoon Traffic :(

    39 miles out – 94.1 mpg – 62 degrees F

68 miles out and crossing into IN at 92.6 mpg in 61 degree temps.

107.1 miles out Rest stop – No wind and its getting cold fast :(

Rest Stop displays at 107.1 miles, 187.9 miles, 263 miles and 313.7 miles - stop for the night.

As temps dropped below 60, 90 mpg + was gone. As they dropped below 55, 85 mpg + was gone. As they dropped below 50, 80 + was gone. At 41 to 42 degrees, we were back in the mid to high 70’s! All of this was with no wind too!

I saw the last of the Full Tank mark at about 230 miles out IIRC?

Do you need to take any action when the DPF light comes on, and/or does the car drive differently?

Re: 2013 VW Passat TDI Specifications

    Hi Rich:

I was speaking to Mike Sefton about that exact question and he said just run it gently but run it until the cycle has completed. I dropped back into a gentle DWL technique allowing the full DPF Regen cycle to occur so it was not to bit of a deal other than consuming maybe .10 to 0.15 gallons of precious Diesel b?

Re: 2013 VW Passat TDI Specifications

Do you think the engine is running less efficiently as the temperatures get colder, Wayne? I wonder if a grille block would help, if maybe the engine isn't running at optimal temperature as it gets cooler? Or maybe a warm air intake but you probably don't want to do that on a press vehicle :p

From the time/miles/mpg sequence it appears average trip speed is around 40mph?

    Hi MoarMPG:

A bit more when allowable but that Chicago traffic was harsh. I have to walk the dog, snap pics and grab a quick bite to eat at each scenic shot or rest area. This is pups first long trip since I brought her form Indiana as an 8-week old.

Mike, I have some more evidence of the cold temp phenomena. Give me a few minutes to put together tonight’s route and pics of the 1/2 tank and final.

Re: 2013 VW Passat TDI Specifications

    Hi All:

There were so many turns I had to break the Google Maps up into two maps!

Day 2 segments: 109.3 miles actual vs. 106.6 miles per the Odometer.

91.8 mpg segment and 86.7 mpg tank for the first segment in 64 to 79 degree F temps.
89.2 mpg segment and 86.5 mpg tank after just 17 more additional miles in 61 to 64 degree temps.

Mike, what I was saying about cold air really taking this thing down is shown above. The sun goes down so pavement temps are falling quickly and when the ambient drops below 70, the Passat takes a drubbing regarding its maximum capabilities. Below 65, 60, 55, 50 and 45 and you can see your actual falling precipitously :( Oh how I wish it were 90 to 100 degrees here again :(

Total miles actually traveled = 109.3 + 782 = 891.3 miles vs. the Odo/Trip 1 – 2 at 877.9 miles with the OEM Odometer still reading short by just 1.526% from actual distance traveled.

837.2 miles per the OEM Odometer with an 850.0 miles actual traveled when the analog Fuel gauge reads approximately/exactly ½ with no parallax.

Sorry about the garbage pic but I only took one before walking the dog near a corn field where she coasted to a stop. I will have to trust Mike’s sleuthing skills regarding what half displayed actually means. The 18.5 gallon spec tank can hold ~ 19.1 gallons so does half mean you are really at one half, a little over given the gallon reserve or a little less than half given that extra .6 mpg over stated capacity in the fuel filler neck?

Re: 2013 VW Passat TDI Specifications

    Hi Rich:

Regarding the DPF regen, I am expecting the next one at anytime although I have no idea how often they occur under a high load - no load P&G, light load DWL or standard medium load acceleration to speed scenarios?

Mike and I had a short discussion about this last week and it would be best if I had him explain the DPF regens in his Golf because they probably are very similar. I was concerned it would be the 6.7L Power Stroke in the Super Duty all over again sucking down .4 gallons of diesel b after ~ every 700 miles. The Passat TDI's first and only regen so far lasted maybe all of 3 to 4 minutes over a 3 + mile distance?

Re: 2013 VW Passat TDI Specifications

    Hi Rich:

Yup. I suffered through I think 3 or 4 of them. Doing the aFCD before and after back calcs showed an average 0.39 gallons consumed for each one of them on my way home to Chicago from the Phoenix area :(

It is one of the posts within this monster: 2011 Ford Super Duty Press Launch

Fortunately my estimated .15 gallons appears to be a little high as Mike believed it would be closer to .1 gallons at most. Now that we have experienced one, it was over quickly and I did not even see it on the aFCD.
