Re: 2013 Lexus ES 300h Specifications

    Hi All:

Finally completed the 2014 Lexus ES300h Speed vs. Fuel Economy chart.

The 2014 Lexus ES 300h is EPA rated at 40/39 mpg city/highway. Look where the ES 300h crossed its EPA highway rating.

And like most Toyota/Lexus aFCDs, the ES 300hs is a bit optimistic. While the odometer was 3.7 percent short – itself a rather large positive offset and measured twice over significant distances – the aFCD vs. actual still indicated 2.3% optimistic. :(

    2014 Lexus ES 300h Review

    Hi All:

The 2014 Lexus ES 300h arrived very well equipped. It bases at $39,350 with the as driven price of $48,459 incl. D&H. It arrived with BSM and RCTA ($500), LDA w/ Intelligent high beams ($965), HD Navi w/ 8" display and all the fixins ($2,625), Power trunk ($400), Parking Assist ($500), Rain sensor wipers and deicer ($155) <-- Doubt anyone in LA will ever use that? --, Ultra Luxury package ($2,435), Bamboo wheel and leather shift knob ($450), Cargo net ($64), and a trunk mat ($105).

    2014 Lexus ES 300h

LAX Parking Spot Pickup. Notice the billboard? :)

Likes up to that point? Lower seat cushion powered extension, and ventilated seats! The ES 300h normally arrives with a standard 10-way power adjustable front seat, automatic climate control, and piano black trim whereas our vehicle arrived with bamboo trim, and the 12-way power heated/ventilated front seats with the lower seat cushion extensions allowing up to 1.4 additional inches. I promise that taller individuals will love it.

Dislikes? No sunglass holder and how to run ventilation while verifying A/C compressor is not running. Figured this out after I stopped and snapped pics at the second top off fill.

Topped off and almost ready to tackle LA (Shell on Century and Aviation just outside LAX) to San Diego on the infamous I405 and I5.

A nicely shaped profile ut a little bland. No character line and lack of detail.
Lexus’ black widow spindle grille is a take it or leave it imho.

Top off to top off: LAX Shell on Aviation and Century to Leucadia Shell just off the I5.

Fought the standard Southern California afternoon traffic nightmare that did not open up until Dana Point, Calif. > 60 miles south from LAX.

    Drive results

aFCD displaying 61.9 mpg with a 60.5 mpgUS actual.
Mileage and fill calculations showed a 2.3% negative offset.

Not bad for the larger luxury oriented Lexus with the Camry Hybrid drivetrain!

    2014 Lexus ES 300h Safety

Passively the ES 300h arrived with 10 airbags including front, side, side curtain, driver/passenger knee and outboard rear seat side airbags.

Actively, the ES 300h included Toyota’s STAR safety system with 4-wheel discs incorporating Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Brake Assist (BA) and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Traction Control (TRAC), and Vehicle Stability Control (VSC).

Driver aids including a Pre-Collision System (PCS), Lane Departure Alert (LDA), Blind Spot Monitor, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) system was included in the review vehicle.

2014 Lexus ES 300h NHTSA 5-Star Crash Test Rating

2014 Lexus ES 300h IIHS Top Safety Pick Rating

The Lexus ES was redesigned for the 2013 model year with an ES 350 powered by a V6 and the ES 300h hybrid. Moderate offset frontal ratings apply to both models and were assigned by the Institute based on a test of an ES 350 conducted by Toyota as part of frontal crash test verification.

The ES 350 and 300h have not been subjected to the IIHS small overlap crash test yet. Given the many Toyota/Lexus failures, engineers are working furiously to fix this problem across both makes product lineup.

2014 Lexus ES 300h longer term Impressions

Marian loved the Lexus ES 300h. As in it could be her next car if the price was right. I gave it 8.5 out of 10 which is pretty darn high for me too. Best mid-luxury offering available in all of North America IMHO.

Plusses: Excellent overall fuel economy and beyond exceptional at the limits. 60.5 mpg actual on the highway drive between LAX and San Diego and > 96 mpg actual after 2 round trips of my 5-mile San Diego area city loop in. I consumed two bars of SOC so maybe 92 mpg actual?

49.5 mpg for the week with Marian and I taking on her daily commute to work and back numerous times. All in, only the Passat TDI, 14 Accord Hybrid, 13/14 Sonata Hybrid, and MB E250 BlueTEC (midsize cars) could keep pace with it around town at the limits and only with a lot of work for some of them.

I liked the 3D highlights of the dash and functional interior as Lexus stepped up. Heated bamboo wheel with leather trim was also very luxurious to the touch.

Heated bamboo wheel, desirable dash layout and soft textured surfaces. Notice the heated/cooled seat functions?

There is enough cargo volume (12.1 cu. ft.) despite the large NiMH pack. A pass through and another 4 cu. ft. of cargo volume would have been better of course. The trunks push button closure was a neat feature but may be a little redundant.

    [IMG] [IMG]
    Auto trunk closure button

Soft ride yet controlled body roll and good enough turn in before under steer at the limits. Marian really liked the ride. I liked the soft ride going straight but felt a little to pogoey and vague for my liking.

I really enjoyed how the interior lit up as soon as you neared the car and prior to grabbing the handle. Proximity for all 4 doors was also a plus. I also liked the shutdown and startup sequences. Get in with seat back and wheel up, buckle the belt, and both the seat and wheel move to the last position. Three person/position memory was a welcome addition yet pretty much standard across the board in this level of vehicle.

Rear sunshade was also a luxury feature I will miss. Manual side rear window sunshades were very easy to use and always ready. Good stuff here if you have kids in child seats or carrying passengers for a long sunny day ride.

Side rear window shade: Probably the easiest “contraption” ever devised.
Pull up and it practically locks itself into place. Same going down.

The cloth headliner and pillar covering was top notch. Not Alcantara or suede but a very fine thread and stitched material. Would like to see this in more vehicles in fact.

Close up of the headliner and A-pillar tightly sewn fabric material.

At night the standard LED fogs lamps and HID headlights were a welcome addition. During the day, Marian liked the standard sunroof. Very California friendly.

$48k as driven may seem a little high but Lexus dealers are dealing so a fully loaded 14 ES 300h should be able to be picked up for lower $40's. That is a good price for the mid-level luxury, mid-size segment.

Few minuses include NAVI w/out on-screen PSL and inability to zoom in or out if a turn or junction ahead was showing.

Highway Fuel Economy needs a little work but 60+ from a mid-size mid lux? Yeah, I complain too much.

98.6 mpg (96.33 mpg actual) maximum effort 10.4 mile (10.8 miles actual) 2 round trips drive loop.

Odo and trip mileage selector button is hidden behind the left of the wheel was hard to find at first.

Driver’s seat bottom extension and wheel extension could have been another inch longer for 6’-4” folks. Passenger seat could use a seat height adjuster. I may have just missed that?

Front and Rear Seating. Truly room for 4 and 5 if needed.

And my number 1 miss was no sunglass holder. Lexus, please outfit your rides with this again immediately. Sunglasses cannot sit on the shelf in the center console all that well and down inside will only see them get destroyed/scratched against the phone or whatever else you may have in it.

As a mid to high end luxury offering, it would be in my drive over all else given the FE for everyone, nicely sized, comfortable but not class leading interior surrounds, and for a price that does not break the segment shoppers back.

Lexus warranty’s the ES 300h with a 48-month/50,000 mile basic limited warranty with roadside assistance for 48 months/unlimited miles, 72 months/70,000 miles powertrain and restraint system coverage, Hybrid System Warranty coverage is for eight years or 100,000 miles, whichever occurs first, and covers the following components: Hybrid control module, Hybrid battery control module, Hybrid battery and inverter with converter. 72 months corrosion perforation protection coverage, regardless of mileage is also included.

Did I mention it has no sunglass holder??? I am sure I did. :(

I am considering the ES hybrid instead of a new Prius. Too bad you are not out this way, I would love to come up and test it out with you.

    Hi Jud:

The ES has the ergonomics the Prius should have to make it livable for us larger folks so I do not blame yo one bit. Hoping the 15 Prius will get the ergonomics and interior appointments right this time?

What do you think of this review format. I have written them up traditionally, embedded them in Sales reports, and now in a more conversational tone and manner with their specs.

Are there plans to test the Lexus hatch (not quite a Prius)? Not that I can really justify one, but there's always hope that I might hit a lottery at some point ;).

The CT200h? I am hoping one is still left in the Southern California Press fleet in June.

The new format is good. I like the many pictures. As you know a picture speaks a thousand words. Well something to think about, A video speaks ten thousand words.

Also, food for thought. Human nature observation.

    1) A good title/pic gets someone to click on the thread.
    2) A good first paragraph and pics gets someone to read the next several paragraphs.
    3) Great Info/content gets someone to read to the end.

Re: 2013 Lexus ES 300h Specifications

That's impressive fuel economy! Do you think this (and the Camry Hybrid by proxy) would be competitive with the Accord Hybrid for the average driver? I always felt that the Accord raised the bar a little.

The review format is good. One thing I would suggest is breaking it off into its own thread with a link to it from this one. Or something along those lines. The title makes it look like this thread is just about the car's specifications, nothing indicates that there is a review hidden down at post #3.
