As new claims for unemployment benefits dropped to a four-year low showing that the job market continues to strengthen this morning; VW is doing its part by hiring.

The Labor Department said Thursday that jobless claims fell 5,000 to a seasonally-adjusted 359,000 in the week ended March 24, the lowest since April 2008, when the economy was heading into the depths of the worst recession since the depression of 1929. The four-week moving average dropped 3,500 to 368,500.

VW’s near term and future contribution

VW’s new Chattanooga manufacturing facility will be adding an additional 800 new jobs as the company continues to ramp up capacity to meet current and expected future demand for its U.S.-produced Passat. This comes on top of an announcement earlier this year of 200 additional jobs at the Chattanooga plant, bringing the total new jobs in 2012 to 1,000.

The VW plant in Chattanooga currently employs more than 2,700 people, about 2,200 by Volkswagen and an additional 500 by Aerotek, the company’s staffing partner.

Jonathan Browning, President and CEO of VW Group of America:
The plant has been working daily overtime to meet the market demand. The additions to the workforce will allow the plant to extend its weekly production capacity while, at the same time, reducing the amount of overtime.

VW promised Tennessee employment for 2,000 individuals and today they are planning to exceed 3,000!

The Chattanooga facility builds the efficient Passat TDI and does so in the worlds only LEED certified Platinum auto manufacturing facility.
