a nice counterpoint

I spent much of the day carefully doing the overdue engine coolant
change in the Prius, which ironically involves wasting quite a
bit of fuel to run the engine up to hot and let it cool down, try
to burp more air out of the system, repeat ... I think I've got
most of it, but it's going to take another few days of monitoring
and topping-up before it's really done. With all that extra
plumbing for the heat-storage tank and valves whose state one is
never quite sure of, one must be *very* patient with this thing.
There will be an eventual writeup, but the topic has received
pretty solid coverage on priuschat and I'm not even sure I was
    doing the right things

So after popping by the Toyota place for more of those dumb
little breakable plastic clips for the fender liners, I went to
our local cruise-in. It's this fairly informal thing that just
crowdsources itself in the back lot of a local restaurant every
Thursday, and is fairly well-attended. The two [now] times I've
gone with the Prius, I've always gotten quite a bit of interest
and this time I threw together the rudiments of the roadtrip bed
rig to show it off in "60mpg RV" mode. Slotted quietly in between
two shiny fire-breathers and set up. Several passersby offered
comments along the lines of "awesome" and wanted to know more about
how hybrids work, how I can be at 160K with all original brake
parts, etc. We can ignore the crusty old vet-with-a-vette from
across the way who wandered over and started talking about how
many japs he killed in a day, but I guess that's his version of
american freedom. Anyway, it was an amusing way to spend some
of a nice Thursday evening -- maybe the first really *nice* day
we've had this year, maybe finally done with the winter that
    wouldn't quit.

I think I will just let Toyota do my coolant change! Too damn risky , especially when the car has no temp. gauge. I have a SG on order for my HCH2 so is it a big deal to switch from car to car. I could at least monitor the temps. for awhile after changing the coolant. H

@Al> Did you get in for your free coolant replacement pump yet? I'm assuming they replace the coolant at that point as well. At least, I hope they do.

I had my 06 free coolant pump replaced. Not sure if new coolant was added. Probably was though. That coolant is not part of the ICE coolant? H

Ah right, wrong coolant. Sorry, my reading comprehension appears to be far from spot on today.

Well, to answer that question anyway, I did my own inverter pump
swap and coolant change at a little over 100k. Pump was cheap
enough and the collective learning experience I could gain from
doing it myself well worth the price of not getting it for free
and having some dealership monkey screw up my car.

It took a couple of days to finally burp the remainder of the
air out of the engine coolant system, but it's done and so is the
writeup -- part 5b of where all this is excruciatingly documented:
