I am here. Sorry I have been remiss in not monitoring the conversation I began. Did anyone have a/any questions for me? On a side note we ended up trading in the Sonata GLS for the hybrid which is getting significantly better mileage but all fairness to Hyundai in much warmer weather than the original posts and subsequent road test.

Oh, well cool! :) You should be seeing better numbers without really trying in the city environment then, and I hope it works as well as you had hoped! Thanks again for taking Chris up on his offer, we're glad the wrinkles got sorted out. Good Luck, and keep us posted, or start a fuel log. ;)

Congrats on the new hybrid. You went from a great car to an even better car. Glad to hear you are doing better with this one. Good Luck!

In post http://www.cleanmpg.com/forums/showpost.php?p=317402&postcount=54, seaurchin wanted to know how well you kept your mileage up in your GLS after Chris' clinic.

Congratulations on the trade. Given the traffic Chris described on his clinic report, I'm sure you're finding it a lot easier to get good mileage too. :)

Being that the driving conditions did not change and my wife's refusal to alter her driving habits. the MPG stayed where it was. Knowing how much more demanding the actual driving conditions were than the EPA test was all I needed to push me into biting the financial buillet and consider a hybrid.

I feel your pain, Balsh. The best mileage I've ever gotten in my 2012 Sonata is 14 mpg city. It is now at about 11-12 mpg. I warm my car up in the winter just like everyone else except because this car warms up fast, I never need to warm it up more than 5 minutes sometimes not at all since my ride mostly is down hill. It is warmed up by the time I have to drive it back up to my house.

I am fighting with Herb Chambers Hyundai in Westborough, MA and Auburn, MA and I have contacted Nicole Martin who is directly in touch with Mr. Herb Chambers. tel: 617-666-8333. In light of the Honda class action case and controversy over the Elantra Hybrid poor gas mileage, I am very angry and I plan on fighting this to the top of the Hyundai Motors Corp. ladder.

Anyone reading this who is having similar experiences and believes that they have been mislead by exaggerated mpg claims, please email me at tomcatmass@verizon.net.
I am trying to find other owners with this problem so that we can join forces and show Hyundai that we won't take this lying down.

Tom, did you not see that Balsh took a drive with our MaxxMPG and agreed that his car was performing to spec?

The epa tests assume no warmup idleing. Fuel injected cars need no idleing. You can learn from this site how to exceed epa without doing anything freaky.

You have a fine car, and I'm sure you have tough city driving conditions. There are ways to deal with them and get epa or at least understand the reasons why you don't.

    Good luck.

Wow! 11-14 is pretty low. Just curious Tom, but does the owner's manual say that warming up is necessary? I live in northern IN and have never seen any ill effects from not warming up. Keep in mind that while idling, mpg is 0 and if the trip is relatively short, the mpg is going to look horrible. Just a thought.

You would have to warm up for 5 hours to get that poor a mileage.. check for a boat anchor dragging behind the car.

Or a brick tied to your right foot.

Not to mention, the OP reported back a while go (if these drive-by posters would actually read the threads they post in), they traded the car in for a hybrid as their typical commute was better suited for one. I also assume you meant the Civic Hybrid controversy, as Hyundai current does not have a hybrid variant of the Elantra at this time. Exaggerated MPG claims? These numbers, that they have to advertise, btw, are derived from a very specific, lab controlled regimen. Blame the test, not the manufacturer. Not that "Tom" is going to read this, either.

Man, dealing with these claims is like pounding your head into the wall over and over and over.
