    Hi All:

As I turned around in front of the HMMA site, the Sonata Hybrid lost the 6th Pip and has officially crossed the ½ tank barrier at 706.1 miles out. Is that an omen or what???

The conditions are not ideal for the Sonata Hybrid's final run to the Atlantic unfortunately. She is built for the open road and she is being driven from stop sign to stop sign crossing smaller towns and cross roads with the strong head and side winds. aFCD is down to 60.7 mpg.

    Hi Paul:

    Thanks.

I pulled over this morning about 25 miles ESE of Montgomery in Union Springs, AL. I have a splitting headache and upset stomach and I cannot seem to shake it :( Today is going to be a little less fun than the pst week but fortunately, GA is the last state to cross to the coast before heading back up to Ann Arbor.

Wayne, check your PM. I sent you a link to the idea we discussed last night.

And remember that I am betting you will have two pips remaining when you reach the Atlantic, so if you're still on three pips when you're approaching the last 20 miles or so, don't hesitate to do some 0-60 and quarter mile testing along the way so you have a complete set of test data. :D

    Weather forecast for Brunswick, GA:
Tonight - Partly cloudy with patchy fog developing. Lows in the lower 50s. Southeast winds 5 to 10 mph.

New Years Day - Partly cloudy. Areas of fog in the morning. Highs in the lower 70s inland...upper 60s coast. South winds 10 to 15 mph.

For the rest of today and into the night, temperatures will be in the mid 50s or higher (reported lows are typically the lowest to be expected - just before dawn), and SE winds that will diminish as the day progresses.

After arriving at the ocean, those S and SE winds will be tail winds, so you'll be off to a good start.

Keep it up Wayne! Battle through like the Sonata has!

I'm coming out to Chicago in mid to late February to visit some family in Naperville! I'd pray that I could learn one or two things from you if you have the time, but thats for another day!

    Keep up the awesome example!

    Hope the headache is better!

As I said earlier, the bad weather gods were held off and trailing you by about 18 hours ... good planning and outatanding "ground support crew" advice. Maybe a little LUCK as well.

Good luck and travel safe for these final legs.

    Hi All:

Happy New Years Eve from Dawson, GA… Not sure what Dawson, GA is known for but their McDonald’s is busy as all get out. I spoke with the order guy and he said it has been this way all day long. He looks beat too.

And the answer to yesterday’s Hyundai Trivia Question?
    A: Approximately 60%.

And today’s Hyundai Trivia Question of the day is?

Q: Having just taken the pic of the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid in front of the HMMA plant in Montgomery, AL this morning, does anyone know when it was built?

And since we are speaking about the Hyundai Motors Manufacturing of America plant, what Hyundai’s are currently being produced there? Hint, two of our favorites as of late ;)

    Good Luck

    Wayne

Was it built in September? I feel dumb answering this without researching it, but i was hoping to answer quickly:-D

Also for the second part, I'd guess Sonata and Elantra!

    Hi Chris:

Temps are decent as I saw a high of 72 after leaving the last stop. Unfortunately the winds are directly up the windscreen and there is no cover from it while traversing many tree lined sections :( Still brought it up from 60.7 back to 61.0 but each warm-up hit knocks 2 to 4 10’s off. You know the CleanMPG mentality however, we bitch and moan about the conditions and never give up to them ;)

Jesse, nice to hear from you and I hope you have a happy new year as well!

Chris (cswee1932), yeah, she is putting up a valiant battle against the head winds and doing a good job of it to!

50 mpg, as stated previously, this “Challenge would not be nearly the success without the CleanMPG heavy hitters doing all the lifting! I only had to sit behind the wheel and drive while they were updating, planning and scheming my itinerary to the best of their abilities. Overall, we were a bit lucky indeed. I was planning on leaving San Diego about 12-hours prior to the time I did and thanks to the bump (total luck I guess?), it all worked out. Not only were the vista’s spectacular but that 20-mile Glide in NM out of the Guadalupe Mountains had to be the highlight :)

Mike, I see you are active on Twitter and I cannot wait to post the finals. I hope a gas pump is accepting CC for fuel purchases tomorrow?

And finally a thank you to my mom who has not yet chimed in. She saw I was not feeling that hot this afternoon and PM’s Mike Sirach to see if it was ok to contact me while on the road. Gotta love a mom like that  I am feeling better after a plain vanilla ice cream sundae.

    Hi Chris:

It was not this past September but there were upgrades to the plant completed about that time frame.

And yes, the vehicles are the 11 Sonata and the all-new 11 Elantra!

    Hi All:

I had better pack it all up and hit it again. Sorry I did not have any pics other than the HMMA plant this afternoon but there is not much to look at after dark ;) I did see a load of Sonata's (2.0T’s, GLS’s, SE’s and Limited’s) heading West on US-82 and when I snapped the pic out of the front windscreen, I received the dreaded “No memory card” message and beep. Darn it, I left it in the laptop and by the time I swapped it, the Hyundai Car hauler was long gone :(

Nice to hear the updates Wayne! We are all pulling for you, and it is indeed impressive what the sonata hybrid will do under adverse conditions in the right hands. I'm sure you are ready to get a nice long rest and break from driving :) Happy new years to all.

Update: Lost the 4th pip @ 957.7 miles.
There is no traffic on the current road. He is seeing a car about every 5 miles or so.

This is a great event to end the year on. The next year is sure to bring more exciting events

    HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!

Sounds like he'll make it with 3 pips remaining. Forgive me, Father Wayne, for underestimating you! Have a safe and sane night, everyone. Happy New Year!
