Darrell, Thanks for the history lesson of Jekyll Island. These trips are always much more pictured to those of us who haven't seen places when members give personal accounts of those particular locations.

The Sonata has really been liking the warmer temps today. He will be meeting JoesGot4 around 10pm at a McDonalds in Meridian. He is going to leave there and try to make it to Montgomery, AL to take pics at the Hyundai plant at 700 Hyundai Boulevard.

Mileage is better on this tank. He lost his first PIP at 362.7 miles. The first PIP on this tank represents about 6 gallons of gas.

For an interesting point, The Chevy Volt official EPA estimated range is 379 miles on EV and the gas engine with a tank capacity of 9.3 gallons. The 2011 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid lost the 1st of 12 PIP's at 362.7 miles. So for $15,000 less dollars, You can have a car that can travel three times farther on the fuel/energy source on board.

Hopefully this evening will be "less eventful" than last night.:D

    Mike,

Brunswick, Georgia has a lot of interesting history. Cumberland Island National Seashore (where JFK, Jr. got married) is another of the Golden Isles' barrier islands, just a bit south of Jekyll. It was Andrew Carnegie's private island when he was a member of the Jekyll Island Club. I've kayaked to Cumberland Island from Fort Clinch, Florida.

Saint Simons Island, the barrier island north of Jekyll, is the site of Fort Frederica National Monument, one of America's earliest settlements, dating to 1736. Christ Church on St. Simons Island, was ministered by both John and Charles Wesley, before they founded the Methodist movement.

The Hofwyl plantation north of Brunswick is an historic rice plantation open for public visitation.

Brunswick's main industries are a main east coast port for importing foreign-made automobiles, a Georgia-Pacific paper mill, and Hercules Chemical.

Wayne, there's a casino boat, the Emerald Princess, leaving town every night for dining and entertainment. However, I suspect you're like me, and consider gambling a tax for people who don't understand math.

Used to be a great seafood place out in the boonies north of town, where you had to knock on the door and give a password to get in. My wife's from the area, and she doesn't even know about it! But I heard it burned down. :(

    Hi All:

I am in Meridian, MS with Joesgot4!

He almost today purchased a white 11 Elantra from John O’Neil Hyundai in Meridian but the wife said wait until mid-February when the tax cometh and left…

He’s driving his silver 06 Malibu and cannot wait to jump in the 11 Elantra.

So far, he’s enjoyed the updates and has a lot of questions about other stuff related to fuel economy in his Malibu which he has touched 47.5 mpg over 200-miles and is shooting for 50. Got to love a guy lke that :)

    Wayne.

I skipped a couple of pages of posts ... so, someone may have already told you ...

The gods of hypermiling are smiling on you so far!

I heard a weather report this afternoon that said a number of roads west of New Mexico were closed ... up tp 13 inches of snow in one area and winds approach 100 mph in another.

    Safe and fuel frugal travels!!!

    Hi All:

Just said goodbye to Joe and surprisingly we had a lot in common regarding work and family. A good guy as well!

Chris, Joe said thank you for the free $400 back from GM due to the steering repair too :)

Regarding the car, Mike Sirach has a special post coming up showing what the 2011 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid is capable of in 70 degree temps even with the strong side/head winds earlier today and it’s a stunner for an all-highway drive!

And the latest… Since this tank is going so well, I am trying to only catch the ¼’s. The third pip dropped out as I came into the Pilot Parking lot for a Subway sandwich dinner. Probably the healthiest thing I have had the entire trip so far too :D

Wayne was in Meridian, MS, and according to the waypoints outlined on page 1 of this thread, he's only about 480 miles from looking over the Atlantic in Brunswick, GA.

Maybe we should start a friendly bet to see how many pips will remain when he arrives at his destination? I vote for "2", although I reserve the right to cheat and change my guess based on changing winds.

Weather in Montgomery AL for Friday shows temps in the upper 60s (perfect!) but SE winds at 10-15mph.
Friday night in Albany and Brunswick GA have matching forecasts of temps around 54 and SE winds at 5mph.

PIP's remaining when he hits the water? I vote for 4 PIP's.

    Hi Jud:

I might reach it tomorrow night if I can knock a few more road miles out tonight???

Vangonebuy, I have to tell you, trips like this would be half the fun, twice the work and not nearly as news worthy if it was not for all the members making their unique contributions. Without Chris, Mike and Paul plus the members and questions, I would be flying blind on no fuel and probably lost in Utah or Montana ;)

We should be able to call it official when the Sonata Hybrid rolls into Jekyll Island that Darrell has described in such great detail.

SD3 Driver, I was alluding to the regular “abnormal” driver like numbers with somebody in this thread yesterday. I will have some of those in two to three days ;)

Darrell, thank you for the excellent history of the Jekyll Island area and I cannot wait to drive around your old haunt!

50 mpg by 2012, someone is indeed smiling upon one of the CleanMPG highlights of the year. Be sure to read the rest of the pages as there is “gold in dem der hills”!

Chris, I am not even going to guess as I have some ability to manipulate the results ;)

    Good Luck

So for the "special" post, I failed to get it inserted in the earlier post.

His first leg on this tank took him to the east side of Shreveport, LA.

That was 269 miles at 59.3 mpg using 4.5413 gallons.

At 6pm he had traveled 385.5 miles at 61.7mpg using a 6.2480 gallons.

So for the last 116.5 miles the 2011 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid sipped 1.7067 for 68.26mpg.

For an interesting point, The Chevy Volt official EPA estimated range is 379 miles on EV and the gas engine with a tank capacity of 9.3 gallons at 37mpg.

The 2011 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid lost the 1st of 12 PIP's at 362.7 miles. So for $15,000 less dollars, the 2011 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid can travel three times farther on the fuel/energy source on board than the Chevy Volt.

    Hi All:

It is 01:35 AM CST and I just burned off another laptop charge so I had better hit the road. Joe, I will not be staying near Selma per your request ;)

Mike, thank you for backcalculating that for me. And the elvation profile was essentially flat over that 116 + miles too!

Damn, if we would have done this drive in the summer months :)

    Thanks again everyone!

    Wayne ...

Watch out for the climbs into Alabama/Georgia. There is often fog this time of year on the hills and in the valleys.

    Be safe.

    Wayne,

If you are headed by this way on your way back, there is a warm bed and the usual breakfast waiting if you want it.

    Wayne,

Be sure to get photos of the very scenic drive on the bridges and man-made peninsula linking Jekyll Island to the mainland, and watch for colorful flocks of White Ibis and the occasional Roseate Spoonbill. Jekyll Island is a state park, so rampant development a la Tybee and St. Simons Islands has been checked. Loggerhead and Leatherback Sea Turtles still nest on Jekyll.

I'm guessing one pip. Wayne is amazing, but crossing the country on two tanks of gas and having 300+ miles in reserve at the end is beyond my imagination.

I wonder if Hyundai will let me write the copy for the Sonata Hybrid involving this trip.

If they make a big deal on Wayne's accomplishments this week they will send a whole lot of Americans and Canadians into their showrooms over the next few months. :D

They could easily sell out of this cars production with the right copy and right marketing push.

    Hi All:

The Sonata took a little detour to the Hyundai Motor Manufacturing of America (HMMA) Plant in Montgomery, AL very early this morning.
