Hello to all MiHG members and friends,

It’s Sunday evening the 15nd and we just got a taste of what I think summer should be like in our area, cooler, drier and with some wind…this is what I call summer! With that said, I wanted to remind you that our 28th Meet will be coming up this Saturday August 21 at the Oak Creek Library. We have lots to talk about since we haven’t met in over two months so plan on attending to share what’s been happening with you this summer. We only have two more Meets this year (after this one) so if you have not made any of our Meets in 2010, your time is running out to experience a wonderful time.

This Meets major segment will be presented by Jolene McNutt from the American Lung Association (ALA) of Wisconsin. Jolene’s topic will be “Driving Clean Air Choice” and will review some of the air quality concerns around the area, what pollutants can do to our health and how we can all make a difference on how we drive. Jolene will also talk about how the ALA encourages the use of a variety of fuels to help address the issue of air quality and health. I first met Jolene at the Concordia Energy Symposium last year and we talked about how vehicle emissions should be considered as “second hand smoke” and should be addressed with the same urgency. Jolene has been quite impressed with what our MiHG is doing to promote lowering emissions through $mart Driving and is looking forward to presenting to our MiHG members. Here are some sites to check out before attending:

Another point of interest, our own Ben Nelson (electric vehicle guru) has produced a video on “How to Build Your Own Electric Car …CHEAP”. If you’ve ever heard Ben speak at one of our Meets or at a Green Event, you know that his comedic style does not belie the fact that he is very, very good at what he knows and does. His track record of conversions has progressed from a riding lawnmower, to a Kawasaki motorcycle and to now a Geo Metro. This 2 box set of a DVD and CD provides a do-it-yourself guide to practical, affordable and clean transportation and will explain everything that an entry-level builder needs to know to build an electric car. We will be selling his set for $25 for anyone that is interested. Here is a thread about his Metro from Ecomodder but starting on the current page of over 100 pages:

For our first timers, here’s the way things generally work at a meet. We begin to gather in the Library parking lot about 9:15am to schmooze and show off our vehicles. If the weather is good, we’ll begin check-in and our VTP’s (Vehicle Tire Pressures) at that time. At 10:00am we’ll begin to setup our room and by 10:20 we should be set to begin our introduction round robin. We’ll have a short session and then take a short break for snacks and item sales. We’ll then have our main session and offer some updates, reviews, news, short subjects and door prizes and then break for lunch about 12:00 pm. After our potluck lunch, we’ll begin our Drive $mart sessions about 12:30 pm and begin cleanup. Beverages and utensils will be supplied but we encourage all attending to bring some food to share. (Main dishes are greatly appreciated). Be prepared to be gracious, with the understanding that the agenda usually does not follow the timeline.
