I remember saying you had that and other items fixed. The chrome fitting is the muffler decoration tip? Did a weld break loose? I'm surprised Firestone did that muffler work... unless they had a bolt-on catback system? Not cool that it's not sitting right again, hopefully you'll get it fixed right! ;)

Yep, it is the muffler decoration tip. Hopefully they will get it fixed right this time!

I will need to do 5 tanks, 200 miles interval of refills, checking my tank mpg, adjusting scangauge, my P&G techniques and shift timing.

Per 1999 Honda Civic HX manual (recommended for best fuel economy):

Let's just say, their idea of economy is not the same as ours. ;)

gears 1,2: as brief as possible.
3rd: up to 25 mph max
    4th: 20 cruise, 25 min pulse, 40 max
5th: 30 cruise, 35 min pulse, max = whatever your max speed is. :(

My Insight is geared similarly to the HX I believe and my shift points are at:

    1-2 @ 8mph
    2-3 @ 17mph
    3-4 @ 24mph
    4-5 @ 31mph

I have shorter gearing in the Elantra and shift 2-3mph earlier in that car.

I do use 20mph deltas when I P&G, but usually only on the highway where it can all be done in top gear and really needs to be that wide to make up for the rapid slow downs while gliding. Most around town P&G is done in 4th gear in the Elantra, occasionally 3rd gear if the speeds line up properly. I shoot for single gear pulses with a top RPM around 2300. I like 15mph deltas for slower work, but I'll take larger deltas on occasion for stop sign to stop sign work.

Cruising can happen a few mph slower in the Elantra but the Insight shift points above are already just above stumble.

The Insight is a completely different animal when using P&G if you want to avoid hitting the pack. It also doesn't really have much extra torque past the LOD value that brings assist into the mix anyway.

5th gear at 20mph is definitely too low. You might be running in Open Loop mode (dumping lots of fuel in to keep the cylinders from burning) if you pulse down in that range.

That is probably why. I'll start pulsing at 30-35ish.

Scott, I would still recommend dropping down a gear for pulses. Look for a top out at around 2300 RPM.

    A fellow MD hx'er here.

Two cents on lean burn that I learned from this application Torque on my Android phone.

Lean burn mode operates above 50-55mph from what I can tell.
It will get out of lean burn mode if your vacuum drops below 3.6 mm/hg or above 22 (when you take your foot completely off the throttle it will bump you out of lean burn since your vacuum peaks).

To get it into lean burn it likes to see a small steady load first, somewhere around 12mm/hg vacuum is normally where it will drop into lean burn mode, you will see your vacuum drop dramatically since you will need more throttle to compensate for lean burn mode. If you dropped out of lean burn due to your foot coming off the gas, it normally will jump back into leanburn within 5-10 seconds of "cruising"

In lean burn mode your timing advance goes higher (more advance).

That is all I have right now. Torque doesn't calculate MPG off of pulse width so it is not the best for MPG calculations when in lean burn, actually shows a 20% loss of mpg in lean burn so I know it is going off of air flow.

If I had access to extended PID's I would have a book written by now on HX lean burn mode parameters but being a cheap butt I am; my 5 dollar android app and 25 dollar bluetooth obd2 connector is the most I am willing to spend to "play"

any questions , feel free to shoot them to ccs507 (At) ptd . net

My best mpg is 44 , best range is 495 miles. Biggest fill up 12.7 gallons. Longest time to get the engine to crank with the fuel gauge below F (poor poor fuel pump priming) is 15 long seconds!!, I have a CVT tranny so I am at a small disadvantage; I also refuse to cycle my engine on and off, I will pay the extra dollar a tank for my convenience of a running engine at a stoplight! I also lose mileage due to a 12" subwoofer and 600W amplifier.

    Cheers
    Charles
