When to Shift?

  1. I've been trying to keep the RPM's below either 2000 or 2500 while upshifting as soon as possible in order to get into the most effecient gear for my manual shifted cars. Anyone want to comment on the lowest RPM for cruise once the highest gear is reached? In the Jag it seems to be about 1000 and around 1500 in the Honda.

I will stay in top gear as long as the engine is running smooth. If it’s flat, no head wind, and no acceleration I can glide along around 30+ at about 1k rpm’s in 5th. if I need to accelerate I will need to shift back down to 3rd or 4th.

Gliding along like that is how I first confirmed my car will DFCO. Driving with the engine doing that little work I can feel the engine cutting out (fuel cut) slowing just a bit and then coming back on.
