Yeah it's pretty normal, I drive at the speed limit (generally 55-62 MPH around here), and accelerate moderately. No hypermiling techniques. Mixed urban/suburban/rural. A careless driver who drove much faster might be in the low fifties with my car. I know two people with the same diesel car that are into maximizing FE and they both have lifetime averages of over 71 US MPG. They don't hypermile but they drive extremely carefully. I think the new US-type smart with the gas engine can deliver 40+ US MPG in mixed conditions, if driven like I drive mine. I know a few people who have them and are doing a little better than that.
