hypermiling bumper stickers

I have 2 Toyota Yarises 3 door liftbacks with the 1.5 liter gasoline powered motor. Being disabled I have to drive vehicles with A/C, A/T, PS, and PB. My Mom has to use power mirrors as well.

1/2 of my trips are to local doctor's offices. The other 1/2 of my trips are from Stow to Cleveland to VA and transgender support meetings. I just started trying to get better fuel economy by using a ecometer while using the updated Garmin nuvi 255WT picking the most fuel economical driving route option.

During my first round trip to Cleveland, I got beeped by several passing drivers. I am wondering if putting a hypermiling bumper sticker on the back of both of my Yarises would reduce my number of angry passing vehicle beeping at me while hypermiling? Part of me says get a easy to read bumper sticker like the white oval background "hypermiling". Part of me says try the "Honk if you love hypermiling" bumper sticker. Part of me says protect the environment by not wasting money of a bumper sticker. Part of me says a more likely to get me shot by some road rage case. Any one with experience with hypermiling bumper sticker experience stories please give me you 2 cents worth of advise.

Re: hypermiling bumper stickers

I have two of the “Research vehicle Please pass” stickers in my back window. They have greatly, in fact all but eliminated honkers and folks letting me know I am #1 as they pass. I still get lots of tailgaters but I think that is going to happen no matter what kind of signage you have.

It might be a matter of how slow you drive also. I go 55 mph on the 65 psl multi-lane highways and drive the speed limit on 55 mph and 45 mph 2-lane roads. I have tried driving 45 or 50 on the 55 mph roads and got a lot of traffic backup and unhappy folks passing me in bad places.

I was considering something like “The closer you are the slower I go” but decided it would cause more trouble than it would solve.

Re: hypermiling bumper stickers

I live in cleveland, and I noticed that on certain days, people are intolerant of slow drivers. One example is Friday. Everyone seems to be in a hurry to get home for the weekend or something and almost everyone is going -above- the speed limit.

However, driving in the far right lane is very helpful. I guess you have to make it easy for them to get around you.

Re: hypermiling bumper stickers

TRY ECO DRIVING
NOT EGO DRIVING

It is a CleanMPG sticker, and I love it!
That is on the back of my 2007 Yaris HB.
Does it make any difference, I really don't know.
As Woody said......but I do 60 mph - not 55 mph.
It might be a matter of how slow you drive also. I go 60 mph on the 65 Psl multi-lane highways and drive the speed limit on 55 mph and 45 mph 2-lane roads.
I find that drivers get mad at me for timing a traffic light. I begin to coast to the light, because it is red, and they get pissed off. Yet, on my route to and from work, I know each and ever light, and how long they take. They want me to drive up to the red light, and stop! Then they want me to take off fast, so that I do not keep them from getting to work one or two minutes sooner! IMO we really need to re-program most drivers to slow down, and not hurry from point A to point B. What is the hurry?

Re: hypermiling bumper stickers

As for coasting up to lights...

I was being followed by a Sheriff's patrol car this week on a two lane connector road with a 45 mph speed limit. I was pegged on 45 mph, but I know the timing of the lights very well and let off early for a very LONG light. The patrol car gunned it to get around me and squeezed in front of me just in time to slam on the brakes as I rolled in right behind him. He did not have lights on or anything like that. I actually rolled by him at the next light as he sat stopped in the wrong lane with a long line of people turning right.

It doesn't surprise me when the average driver zips in and out of traffic to get two car lenghts ahead of me, but it surprised me that the Sheriff's deputies are doing it too.

Re: hypermiling bumper stickers

I'm starting to think that the car you drive plays a roll in the behavior of other drivers too. I've changed cars, but not driving speeds, in the last month. I've gone the better part of 6 months without being honked at or flipped off in the Elantra. In the last week there was: lady who flashed her lights to let me know I was in her way in the right lane. Did she go around? Nope. She stayed glued there for the mile or so to the exit we both took off I40. Trucker coming down a hill blew his air horn because I dared to go the actual upper limit in the middle lane (left and middle are through lanes, right lane becomes I440). Big 'Ol truck driving guy rode my bumper getting onto I40 and stayed planted there even though he had a chance to go around. Stayed there for over a mile before finally honking and blowing by. Crazy cell phone lady that started to take the wrong exit toward Garner, NC but wanted to merge back onto I40 (and me!) by driving 60 on the berm. She spent the better part of 5 miles attacking my bumper before cutting off to the right (and almost hitting another car) on her way to Clayton, NC. Mazda 3 guy that couldn't abide me slowing down to make a right hand 90 degree turn about took off my bumper scooting around me.

I dunno, maybe fall just brings out the carzies... or maybe it's that back glass on the Prius gives you a better window into the nut cases behind you. Maybe it's just a general hatred towards hybrids that people seem to have accumulated.

Re: hypermiling bumper stickers

My latest bumper sticker from http://www.makestickers.com
It is an arrow with the words IN A HURRY, THEN PASS ME
It seems to work, for more drivers are not driving close behind me, and a few more are passing, just as I want them to.
